Pet in vanquished-creature list?

I have just finished (i.e. died in) a very brief game, playing a
rather unsuccessful Valkyrie. At one point I got a message along the
lines of "You feel sad for a moment. Then it passes," which I seem to
recall means that my pet kitten died off-screen. To be sure, I never
saw it again before I kicked the bucket myself.

But then in the list of vanquished creatures I notice "a kitten" at
the top. Is that my dead pet? And if so, why is it in the list if I
did not kill it? Am I missing something?

The "vanquished creatures" list shows ALL monsters that were killed
(it's not just a "creatures vanquished by you" list).

All dead creatures (except yourself) show up in the vanquished list,
regardless of how they died.
