Eh, I am not worried. I just know Intel's top chip is so overpriced I can build a basic AMD gaming box for the cost of it.

As for the like-to-like, that's why I have got to go out and read more specs and comparisons. Haven't had time the past 2-3 weeks.

Like I said...I might be building my first Intel-based box at the end of the year, if I see the performance and the pricing is about the same.

I'm not so into AMD that I'll pay a silly price for a 965 though either, when the 955 is like $46 less and i can change the mult and have the same darn chip.

$46 = more drivespace or a better video card. :)

Roger on that. Or, I'll get the 2 550BEs, open all 4 cores on them, and OC them all and keep the best one.

550s should be about 80-90 by the end of the year, I think.

But, I'll look at i5 first. Plus i gotta wait on the 5xxx video cards too.

Ugh. I am too impatient. I have NewEgg up shopping now. lol

You are correct..., which is why on the second page I posted a very similar build to yours but went with the 955 to actually make it a little cheaper than the i5.

I had the AM3 build originally built in my signature thread to compare against an Core i7 (Socket 1366) build, so I was able to put higher price (full case... etc.) items in to show what more you can with an AM3 build at a price of a Core i7 build. I updated my build for the Core i5 but at that time didn't go back and revisit my AM3 build. Have since updated my thread to reflect those changes.

Wait for 5xxx series and get AMD, you won't be sorry. I'd be rather surprised by Intel if they released a sub $100 I5 like Phenom II 550 that you can unlock to quad.

I am planning on it. I saw the anticipation of the 5870x2 for $600 around Oct-Nov? Hopefully on December 26, that will come down on sale. 😀

I just need to build a computer that will last me 2-3 years. I've built 2 machines in the past 2 years. Spending $1500-2000 every year is expensive. I figure I spend $2500 one time and get something smokin fast and it'll be at least....18 Months lol

i5 is all good and for the price i must admit i am impressed but with the way money is nowadays i think the best route to go is for a flexible system. now amd may not be up there with the highest end performance but for the price you pay you are getting more than what you need not saying that intel's i5 does not but think of the lack of flexibility you have to use a p55 motherboard you have to use dual channel dd3 ram you have to make sure you have a graphics card and your cheapest option for a processor is only the i5 750 which is around £150 (im from uk btw). I admit im a big amd fan and not a very big intel so forgive me if i sound biased but i dont really have anything against intel and im basing my opinion on facts right now. amd is alot more flexible i currently brought an asus m4 series 790gx am2+/am3 mobo but didnt really have the money to buy a new phenom 2 processor (currently deciding between a 720 and a 955 just wondering wether i need all that power from a 955 and wether its worth the money incase i dont make full use of it) but i can still use my athlon 4800 for the moment until i can buy a new processor if i went the i5/i7 route even n i originally had a core 2 and a 775 mobo from intel i wouldnt have that flexibility. anyone can make a powerful cpu but there are other things to think about say i got an i5 and it had a fault or broke down there is nothing i can do till i can replace it and that can possibly take a while especially if it has to get sent off but with a phenom 2 i can get a cheap am3 or am2 cpu to replace it temporarily or if my gfx card breaks down a p55 board has no igp so i'm screwed there sure i can get a cheap gfx card for the time being but atleast with a 790gx board i have the hd3300 igp and for an igp that is really good so i dont even need to buy a temporary fix iv seen the benchmarks and the i5 doesnt beat the 955 by that much in most test so you wont lose out on that much performance but you will still have the flexibility you need as well as much more cpu you have the option of tripple core which are just as good but cost less and is good for those who dont need full quad core power if you are building a new system and you want the power with no intention for a back up plan than by all means go with intel but if you want to be flexible and more cautious of possible mishaps than go with amd coz you will always be able to have a good cheap backup plan

I5 slower then P2? What benchmarks were you looking at? From what i've seen the I5 750 beat down the 965 in almost every test. Anyone going with a 965 over a 750 now is just a fanboi and should be banned from this site.

I've read alot of benchmarks and compared friends that have these processors as well. From many things i've read is that the amd pii 955 either beats the i7 or matches it in most games. I myself would get the amd pII 955 even though it loses to the i7 in some benchmarks that i hardly ever use but hey I just use it for games. I5 is just suppose to be a cheaper version of the i7 just reduced in some areas. I'm neither an intel or amd fanboy or whatever you call it, I just look for the CPU that does the job for me at a good price. When I saw the i5 pricing i was surprised, and was thinking about ordering it. But I didn't want to buy it blind so i went to do research and saw the pii 955 and looked at its benchmarks and reviews. Comparing the two I'm planning on getting the amd pii 955 instead.

But...i heard the i5 can overclock quite a bit. I5 750 does not beat the 965 in almost every test if you actually done some research, you're the one sounding like an intel fanboi that should just be banned from this site.

If you look at non-gaming benchmarks you see i5 is easily the stronger CPU. You would then think that maybe the reason Phenom II performs close to even i7 (and we all know the power of i7) in games (keep in mind Phenom II doesn't even match Core2Quad clock for clock, even in games) could be to GPUs being the bottleneck in games. So the true future-proof would obviously be i5 which will pull ahead in high-end gaming, use your head. Especially when we see some tri and quad fire 5870 benches start to hinder the GPU bottleneck is when we'll see i7/i5 really shine. :)
