Phenom II X3 720 vs C2D E8400

OCING. I will be doing minimal oc'ing. maybe MAYBE either of them up to 3.3 or 3.4GHz.

With that said, they are almost identical, but the Phenom II X3 720 has an extra core. What do you guys think?

E8400 = 164.99
P2X3720 = 147.99
 
Read the Tom's Hardware comparison of the Intel Core 2 Duo versus the AMD quad. They were fairly matched up but if you put the E8400 against about the first half of the product line from the AMD Phenom line the Intel proc won easily.
 
Also check out the platform and the deals available. E8400 and an Asrock P45 = $260
Pll 720 and Biostar 790GX = $212, both mobos support crossfire.
That $48 is the difference between a 4850 512 and a 4870 512. While the E8400 will outperform the 720 in most games right now, the extra core of the 720 will help with some games now and in the future along with some applications. It's not a clear cut victory for either option.
 
if you want to OC the E8400, the ONLY thing you have to do is just up the FSB from 333 to 400 and call it a day, (provided you have the E0 revision of the E8400) this will keep you at a constant 3.6 and it'll be COMPLETELY stable.
 
You should consider the 720 BE. With the right board you can try and unlock the 4th core. Of course that core was disabled for a reason so extensive testing needs to be done to ensure that it's stable. Even with 3 cores it is still a formidable CPU, especially if you overclock it. Look out on New Egg for good combo deals on it.
 
guh such a hard one... even for me.

im inclined to think the whole more core = eventual gratification argument is BS. stick with what is good now because what will be good in the future is very dependent on current use. by the time you see mainstream multithreaded apps there will be 6-8 maybe even 10 core processors out and your 3 core will mean crap.

thats just my opinion, however. i would personally go with the 8400 unless you do a lot of heavy multitasking.

though one thing i WILL say is that the C2D are in HEAVY need of a price reduction. wtf is intel thinking!?
 
8400 will goto 4ghz with the stock cooler and with 1 minute of bios changes. Why wouldn't you overclock?

Thats not true for every E8400, nor would I say the majority.

Games like FSX, Empire: Total War, Dawn of War 2 and Supreme Commander. Are taking advantage of multicore CPUs now given their nature (simulation/RTS). These games clearly favor a 720BE over and E8400.

noob thing to say. im not GREAT but im not bad at overclocking and i cant get certain chips to OC. i could not get my cousins 2 Q6600 to go to 3.6 on water so what? wow my e peen has shrunk! what evers will i do?
 
I speak from experience. From my 4.9ghz E8500 to my 4.5Ghz I7. Give me any E8400 and i'll get it past 4ghz on a stock cooler.

Can't get your chips as fast as mine just show's you're not as talented as i am.

Ok .... it's one or the other ...... you're either 14 years old or you are a very disturbed individual.

lol... i have only seen 2 E8500 in my life hit 5.0 and that was with extreme water cooling. i would really love to see pictures of your setup as well as proof you can get the E8500 @ 4.9 and stable. i had a hell of a time hitting 4.5 with mine and it was not stable for long periods of time.
