I have had the computer about 3 years (my first build). All of the sudden, i started getting a blue screen that said something like "windows shut down because it detected an error" or something along those lines.. after a few minutes i could turn it back on and it was fine.. but then it started doing it back to back. I opened it up, dusted it out real good and everything and plugged it back in.. I turned it on, and was trying to think of what was happening, so i turned on the ASRock OC tuner.. (i have an ASRock motherboard). I watched the CPU temp climb from nothing, up to 220 degrees or so, and then boom, the computer turned off. no blue screen, just right off.. You could turn it on in a few minutes and it would do the same thing. Not sure what made this happen out of the blue. I dont know what the overclock thing is supposed to be set at sothat it isnt overclocking, but its like 201hz X 17 multiplyer, which i think is the norm. Runs a little over 3Ghz or whatever, like i think its supposed to. I assume its the CPU heatingup, only because of what i explained above. or does the blue screen mean soemthing else? Exactly what do i need to do? Or is all lost for me?? Please help, its tough living with no computer. Thanks in advance.

You think it actually could come loose on its own? Like I said, ve had the computer for about 3 years, and it hasnt moved. This problem just started. 3 years ago, I attached it properly. I mean, Im not doubting you, and im willing to try anything to get it fixed, im just giving you some more details.

what does resetting cmos entail? Sorry it doesnt sound familiar to me. Also, do i lose anything when i do it? And how do I do it?

The fan appeared to be working on it, but ill have to double check that. Let me know on the cmos thing

i just had a similar issue with my amd system turned out to be the cpu fan died a bit , was working but only sniping at 156 rpm's not the fastest speed going lol
start up into bios and see what speed the cpu fan is doing on yours for one. possible remove the hole cpu cooler and redo the thermal paste and reseat the cooler

If I remember correctly, when i looked at the OC tuner (it has all the fan speeds and whatnot right there), it was going at about 3500rpm. Im curious to hear more about "resetting cmos" though. I wish i had a little more detail on that, as Im not familiar with it.

Refer to your mobo manual or search the web for that model for CMOS reset - usually involves removing the battery and moving a jumper to restore the system to defaults. I *think* he's thinking it may help reset the thermal sensor in case it's no longer accurate. If your fan is spinning at 3500rpm (looks like that fan can go up above 5000 under load) there is no way you should be getting that hot (unless for some reason the CPU is getting way overvolted or the heatsink really isn't making contact any more).

resetting the bios would just put all the setting back to factory defaults in case something has changed within the settings, that could be causing the problem. it could be an option if only to remove that possibility from the list of things that are the real causes for problem

on the mobo some where there would be a little jumper , 3 pins with two of them covered with a tab , you move the tab either off completely or set it on the other one. the mobo manual should have something in it about resetting the bios
if anything , unplug the power and just take out the round battery thats on the mobo that holds the bios active and when removed would reset the bios

Something easy to try too:
It can also be dust accumulation, between the fins of the CPU heatsink, that blocks the airflow. If you have access to compressed air, or the exit of a vacuum cleaner, pushing air onto the heatsinks can cure many problems. If you do it make sure that you have a way to block the fans, like a popsicle stick, as overspinning can scrap them. Do it to the power supply as well. And do this outside of your home. :-0
I've had heat problems when I upgraded from an AthlonX2 to a Phenom X4 955. Changing the power supply solved the issue, as the top mounted PS fan (mounted face down) was now able to move the air from the area just where the mobo regulators are located.

hmmm. ok, ill give this a whirl when i get home from work i guess. you cant just reset the bios when you first turn on the computer and you have the option to go through those setup menus? I am just asking because it sounds easier. If not, then ill open it back up and see if i can figure it out the way you said. While I have it open, is there a simple, easy way to double check and make sure the heat sink is still touching properly without screwing anything up? I dont have anymore of the goo you put on there at the house right now. I built the thing three years ago and havent really opened it up, other then to dust it out, since then. Thanks for the help by the way. Im going to take whatever Im told on here and print it out at the end of the day before i head home and see what i can do. Any other advice or options you might want to lay on me between now and 5pm eastern, feel free. I guess the more options once i have this thing opened back up, the better.

Man, i wish i could remember exactly which motherboard i had. I would like to find out exactly what my voltage and all that CPU clocking stuff should be set at, to make sure someone didnt inadvertently change something there. Hopefully this BIOS thing will get it fixed. its just so odd for it to pop out the blue like this. and i do recall my fan used to run at 5K, not 3K.. as for the several talking about cleaning it out. I did that, and stated it in my original post. I dont have cats, but i do have dust like anyone else. I used a duster, and blew it out with good ole lung power in some spots. I got plenty of dust out of there, which i always do.

is the battery pretty obvious to find on there? I like the idea of trying the easiest route first :) I should have the mobo booklet somewhere in my closet, i guess i could try and dig it out.

ok, ill give this a try when i get home. so have you guys ever experienced what im experiencing here, and has this worked to fix it? Or are we just kinda going through a checklist of general troubleshooting ideas?

Took the battery out for about 15 minutes.. didnt help anything. im watching the ASRock OC tuner (where it shows CPU temp and other temps) and the CPU temp just keeps climbing. up to 175 right now.. that means my computer is probably about to shut back down. CPU fan is running at 3200 RPM.. i used the duster on it.. i dont see any little thing to reset cmos or whatever (but i thought thats what removing the battery will do..) Either way it didnt work.. Now what???

Remove the fan from the heatsink and make sure the fins are not clogged.

alright, im back at work now (only time i can really use the computer to get help fixing the one at home, lol).. When I put it together, I put thermal paste and made sure it was on there good. It has been 3 years, though... Do you think that stuff isnt good anymore? Or that it could have come loose? Also, If I take off that black clamp thing that holds it all snug, do i have to replace the thermal paste, because i dont have any on me right now.. Or can i open that up to see what's going on, and be able to close it all back up?

An for the person who said to remove the fan from the heatsink to see if the fins are clogged.. I used the duster on it, then blew it out myself, and checked the rpms, it is running at 3200 rpm (i do remember it running closer to 5K when it was brand new.. i think), but i also physically plugged it in with the case open and saw it spinning.

Do you think something knocked the heatsink loose from touching what it needs to? Exactl what should i look for when its open? It felt pretty snug on there when i checked last night, the black lever was down tight. i unclamped it and clamped it again.. felt snug..

Just trying to ask as much as possible, so when i get home i have every option available. Its really sucking not having a working computer at home right now

I don't *think* a CPU can "take" voltage or have heat runaway on its own. If it's really getting that hot there could be an issue with the motherboard pushing too much voltage or in some freakish way the PSU is pumping out more than the mobo's voltage regulators can control and it's causing your cpu problems. Does the ASRock software show you the vcore voltage? If not, CPU-Z or OCCT will.

If you're feeling lucky, fire the PC up and report back with all the various voltages. Can take a screenshot with a camera phone if it shuts down really quick.

well, the same spot im looking a thte fan speeds (on the ASRock OC Tuner) you can also do your overclocking and your voltage shenanagins.. Yes, when i get home, i could snap a pic of what they are set at. I was very curious to see if someone had accidentally touched the OC multiplyer or something, but i dont know what it should be set at, its been so long. I think its set at 200hz X 17 multiplyer, but thats going off the top of my head. it also sounds like it is where it has been since ive had it. as for the voltage, i have no recollection as to where it should be set at. I just dont get why this would all of the sudden pop up as an issue out of nowhere. I didnt even do any changes to the computer, ya know?? Ill try fiddling with the heatsink one more time since the computer is still disconnected and laying open on the operating table, and then ill turn it on and snap a pic of the voltage, or just write it down or something.. sigh.. another day, no computer
