Hmm. I do boot WinXP in ~7 seconds (boot menu to desktop). Without a SSD. On a quite old and slow dual-core CPU. How? Use Boot Cooler, http://www.bootcooler.com - but it is still beta.

It is good, however, that someone at last bothered to speed up POST.

[citation][nom]Renegade_Warrior[/nom]Damn, I can't get into the BIOS!Where's the Sledge Hammer?[/citation]

LOL As if that split second or two you get to hit Delete or F8 wasn't already short enough. Personally, I'd rather have a second or two delay in the POST, and a much faster Windows load.

Still, any improvement is good.

It would be nice if there was a generic easy way to window into the BIOS from the System tools (even if it defaulted to a reboot afterward - 1 second wouldn't be much of a wait).

I know there are some boards out there that have features to do this - my ASROCK does and has both manual and a number of preprogrammed overclock models - but many don't.

Usually when you boot from cold you boot the PC then switch on the monitor and wait. Now it's getting to be boot PC, switch on monitor and...huh? Did I turn this off last night?

You forgot the second i; it's subarashii

Otaku fail

[citation][nom]ssalim[/nom]Very nice. However, my xbox 360 'boots up' in 9 seconds (I didn't really count but it feels like not more than 9).[/citation]
My GameCube loaded up in 5 seconds, in fact, I think my N64 was up and running in 2 seconds... Wait, better yet, my calculator is just ready to go the second I press the ON button. And all this time I was wasting my time on a PC...

I will point out that oftentimes the largest determining factor for boot time (as far as POST/cfg goes) is MRC latency ("memory reference code" that configures the timings of the memory controller whether it be on die on off) I'd be really interested to know what the memory configuration is on this system - I'd bet anything that it's SUPER minimal. (1 dual rank UDIMM, for example.)

Pfft. Why would I wait 4 seconds to boot up so I can use Word when I can use a typewriter that's always on and uses no electricity?

Technology fail 😀

It's about time! My Gigabyte board takes about as long to POST as my IBM XT which I still use for old 8088 CGA/EGA games, 10mb hard drive and all! (My Amiga boots quicker though!). I'm not really a Mac person anymore since "his Steveness" decided trendiness was "in" and PPC deserved an early death, but I did always like the option to hold down keys to get into Open firmware on PPC machines (even the IBM ones). It would be nice to see something like this on x86 PC's. Shouldn't have EFI been the replacement for the legacy BIOS by now anyways?

Because there is no spell check on a typewriter now is there?

boot time is probably the performance measurement i care about the least on my desktops, seeing as how they are almost always left on. my asus netbook already has a quickboot feature like this, you power it on and it pretty much goes straight to the windows loading screen.

But can a typewriter play Crysis?

BIOS is a ~ 30 year old technology that needs to be replaced....The industry need to agree to make it happen. There are a lot of proposal on the table from different sector but no progress.

Too much resources spent on an inefficient technology.

[citation][nom]nachowarrior[/nom]nice 10 second boot, wonder how fast that fast boot ubuntu edition would load on this same setup. 5 secs probably haha.[/citation]
Good question...On the same laptop, Windows Vista boots in 1 minute 7 seconds, and Ubuntu 9.04 boots in about 12 seconds, nearly six times as fast! Now on a laptop that boots in 10 seconds on Vista...Ubuntu would be worth seeing.

Sadly, micros~1 funded the development effort on this under the stipulation that not only would this be a Windows-only performance gain but that it had to add 20 minutes for all other operating systems boot time.

If you don't mind playing it as a text only game and mailing your inputs to Crytek, then yeah no prob...

"Hey I got mail from Crytek!"
"Whassit say?"
"You were pwned by Koreans. Restart?"

i never have been able to figure out what takes bios so damn long to "do it's thing" in the first place. glad that someone is finally taking steps to speed up something that had been a pain since the 286.
