Hello everyone,
I am currently trying to find a way to keep my ping in games less than 20 at almost all times. I have tried everything in my power to fix that.
BTW. I cannot get the router/modem in my room i have tried a powerline adapter but that just crashes my whole internet.

Current Network Setup:
Router: netgear nighthawk xr500
Modem: motorola arris white something
Wifi card: net gear nighthawk ac1900
Wifi Down:171
Wifi Up:12
Ping in BO4: ~30-40
Fortnite ~35-45

Please help me find a solution to this
Thank you

Ping for the most part will be limited by physical distance to the server. It is the propagation delay of your signal reaching the server and being acknowledged. 30-45 is very decent ping. The only way to get better ping would be to physically move closer to the target server or to your ISP's exchange point.

No, that IS the solution.
Ping is the time for a round trip between you and the server.

The only real thing you have control over is the signal between your PC and the router.
Generally, that should be ~1ms. If it is more than that...fix that.
The best "fix" is an ethernet cable, and not WiFi.

But the problem is I CANT have ethernet in my room. Trust me I've tried everything. From powerline to going up in the attic and trying to extend the one ethernet cable. Please I need to try and fix this somehow

No, you CAN.
Just that you or whoever owns the house does not want to go through the pain of wiring.

What is the actual "ping" between you and the router?
Apart from actually moving house, that is the only value you can maybe change.

Can you please explain to me how the wiring thing will work or how to do it? And from speed test it tells me 12 ping.

No, not speedtest.
tracert to your actual router.

Like this from a powershell or cmd command line:
VieetrM.png

That is mine going to my router.
<1ms round trip time.

That is the only number you can influence.

Ok. But can you explain to me how to do the wiring in the attic.

So I have to run an ethernet cable from down stairs to up stairs? Can I like put it through the roof or something?

The exact 'how' depends on the house, who actually owns it, and what level of effort you want to go into to make it look "not crappy".

Ok I will update tomorrow in the afternoon.

Think of "ping" like the time it takes you from home (your PC) to school or work (the game server).

Once you leave your driveway (your router), you have no influence over speed limits, stop lights, other people crashing and blocking traffic, etc, etc, etc.

The only part of that trip you have direct influence over is from your chair to the end of the driveway.
After that...you can't change things.

Or, move closer to work.

We've not yet determined if there is an actual issue that a Cat5e cable will "fix".

What is the connection like between your PC and the router?
What was the result when you ran tracert to that router?

Trying to keep your "ping in games less than 20 at almost all times" is almost certainly a lost cause, due to reasons completely out of your control.

Things you can do is something like 144Hz monitor and hit 144Hz FPS + 1ms refresh. some monitors are 7ms or higher. better mouse and mechanical keyboard can increase your responsiveness. large mouse pad and try 12inch 180. Going wired will help. wifi can't send/rec at the same time and wired can.

If COD is still player hosted you can port forward and then have a chance to host the game. giving you zero ping.

I believe you are trying to aim for an unrealistic and barely gainful target.

Currently you are getting a response from the server within 0.08 seconds. You basically want to get a reply from the server within 0.04 second. Can you even react to the information fast enough? Average logged human reaction time is 0.215 seconds according to a website humanbenchmark.

I feel that anything under a ping of 80ms does not impact gameplay in fast paced games.

You can capture single frames showing hitscan missing the hitbox due to not having the updated position even when on your screen it's on the edge of it. the more you lag you can try and shoot a moving target and have your cursor on them while they are running and all your shots miss. every ms counts. 80 is pretty bad in fps. if it takes 80ms to actually see a target and then .215sec to react then it's 80ms+ .215 before your first shot.

What is hitscan? You are really generalizing how hit detection works in games, I really do not believe it's that simple and there are compensation mechanisms (look into server rewind lag compensation techniques). If 20ms of ping was needed for a game to be playable then it would only be playable by a very small population of people who happen to live in very close proximity to the game's server and do keep in mind the server location for each game would be different.

But I have a g pro keyboard g502 mouse, large mouse pad and a 240hz 1ms monitor and if I were to have a 15 ping and a guy that im up against has 30 ping and we shoot a shotgun at the same time then i would be able to get the kill because it took less time from my end to reach the servers end than his

I agree with USAFRet, you cant control what happens after the signal has left your networking equipment. The only thing you can really do is get wired Ethernet.

hitscan is a no lead shot. I wasn't generalizing. I was being very specific. it's supposed to hit where you click instantly. soldier 76 in OW for example is hitscan. 20ms to 80ms is a huge jump. if you play in any competitive ladder teams won't even consider you if you're over 100ms.

lag balancing isn't common in any game. games have tried it and found that people abuse it easily.

Did not know that. Thanks for the info.
