i have something going on i havent seen posted about before. i am on cable,
running win xp. what happens is when i first go in an online game i have a
big ping spike as i start moving, like up to 1000, which gradually comes
back down to a very playable high double digit, low triple digit ping and
remains there throughout the duration of the game. it will happen in
spectating or playing mode and of course i drop packets and lag during that
time. as i said, if i wait for it to settle everything is fine. i hate
giving up like that 30 seconds or minute of play though that it takes it to
settle. could this be a settings issue, or maybe an increase in folks on
this node? any replies appreciated.

www.pingplotter.com

try using large size packets (500 bytes or more, std ping packet is 56
bytes) and trace your route with the pingplotter program, tell us what
you see.

Try scanning for viruses and spyware.

Does this happen on every server? I get lagged out initially when I
enter an Anti-TCC protected server.

Have a look at the "edit/advanced options" dialog, under the packet
options tab.
