I’m soon going to be heading off to university where I’ll be doing a lot of CAD work and modelling etc for my course, I currently have an i5-4690K, MSI 1070Ti, 16gb hyperX RAM and MSI gaming 5 mobo.

I have been given £500 to put towards upgrades for my pc however can go over this budget if needed, I was looking at possibly 6th gen CPU’s but maybe thought 8th would be best?

Any advice or help would be great, I’m looking for a new CPU and a nice motherboard to go with it!

Thanks

Other than the CPU, everything looks good there. If you can manage to get hold of a i7 4xxx cheap and just replace that, your rig will be nicely balanced with plenty of performance.

Ir you can go with this...

CPU: Intel - Core i7-8700 3.2 GHz 6-Core Processor (£289.09 @ Amazon UK)
Motherboard: MSI - B360M PRO-VDH Micro ATX LGA1151 Motherboard (£65.99 @ CCL Computers)
Memory: Corsair - Vengeance LPX 16 GB (2 x 8 GB) DDR4-3000 Memory (£85.99 @ Aria PC)
Total: £441.07

Thanks for the speedy reply, I was thinking of going for the Unlocked version of the 8700, but would it better to go for the 8600K instead for price ? And motherboard wise I’d prefer to go with an ATX board that’s a bit flashy because it’s a gaming PC

For your workload you have mentioned above, you will need all the cores and threads you can get your hands on. Even this will be pretty good at a cheaper price...

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant

CPU: AMD - Ryzen 7 2700 3.2 GHz 8-Core Processor (£219.98 @ Amazon UK)
Motherboard: ASRock - B450 Pro4 ATX AM4 Motherboard (£76.80 @ CCL Computers)
Memory: Corsair - Vengeance LPX 16 GB (2 x 8 GB) DDR4-3000 Memory (£85.99 @ Aria PC)
Total: £382.77

If you can, wait for mid-year. Ryzen 3000 and Intel whatever-lake will probably launch by then, with a lot more cores for the same budget. Buying today would be like purchasing an i7-7700k weeks before Ryzen 1800X launched.

Oh, and don't go below gen-8 Intel, quad-cores are entry-level now, like the i3.

However, the smartest move would be to look for benchmarks on the specific software you'll use. Some of them like i7's better, others favor Ryzen. Like if you will do render, go Ryzen, they have the cores. But if you want OpenGL performance for the CAD software, probably Intel is a better bet. But again, wait for middle of the year, rumors say Ryzen 3000 will reach Intel performance and clocks.

That sounds good to me to be fair I dont have to upgrade straight away but I will need to upgrade before september so thats perfectly fine! CPU wise i reckon id prefer to stay on intel just for preference so ill stick to either a i5 or i7

I get you, I'd stay with AMD even during the Bulldozer era. But wait for Ryzen 3000. There is the possibility of a big shake-up.
