Playing against AT

Got to thinking (dangerous, I know).

Made a rad/rad defender to play as a blaster. Minimal healing, mostly
damage.

Designed it on HeroPlanner to lvl 30.

Didn't want to get the dreaded 'blind invite' from people looking just
for a specific AT, so I named him 'Not a defender'.

Got to lvl 4 inside an hour.

Then, started getting 'blind invites'.

So, I answered one

Them: "hlp with miss, can u heal?"
Me: "did you look at may name?"
Them: "y"
Me: "i'm not a defender"
Them: "yes u r"
Me: "no......i'm not"
Them: "thn y did u tke def?"

Jeez.

I quit out of the game for a reality check.

I've created tankers with no taunt just because I wanted
super-strength...haven't really teamed her up yet.

I've never created a tanker _with_ taunt.

No, wait, I lie, I did take it once in the hopes that it would cause the
taunted mob to close to melee and attack instead of staying at range.
[This was after a 5 minute standoff of a BP shaman casting stone prisons
on me while I was in Unyielding stance.
I couldn't move (pre I3) and he wouldn't come within range.]
It didn't do that so it was respeced out the next day.

At this point i'd have said "I don't heal people who won't use proper
english" and they'd go away forever.

See this doesn't matter since they probably searched for defenders and
your name came up. They don't care what you're called, they KNOW you
are a defender.

"Not A Healer" might have been a better choice.

I'm slightly amazed at the idiocy of the inviter that they assume all
defenders are healers - I thought that particular bit of silliness went
away some months ago.

Which begs the question - how do you tell someone IS a healer? I've been on
teams where the leader just went out and snagged us a healer - what can
they see in the team-search list that I can't? Is it just ass/u/med that
all defenders are healers? Or is there a powers info screen I can't seem to
find?

If the person is in range, you can do an 'info' and look at their
powers.

If the person has teamed before with someone.

Friends list.

Private tells.

And, yes, it is just ass/u/med that all defenders are healers.

I don't find runners are that much of a worry these days.

During that day or so of experimentation I used it quite a few times.
Not once did it ever induce a ranged attacker to close to melee.
Not once did it ever pull one guy from the edge of a group, it always
brought the whole group - even when the target mob was 10 or more game
feet away from his closest friend and I was at max range of taunt.

It's a waste of a power for anyone who doesn't play a taunt-bot
meatshield tanker.

They're not a worry, just an annoyance. My non-Tankers never even
bother hunting Trolls in Skyway, for example, because almost half
of them run away.

This is, eerily enough, contrary to my experience. I have found that there
are two types of runners. One is the actual perp in a street crime: A
drug dealer, purse snatcher etc. At least until Issue 3 or so, these
would consistently run away, leaving their comrades to fight you. But
taunt them and they'd stay. These days, more of them are staying anyway,
but there is still some running to be saved.
The other type of runner is the badly wounded villain who runs away.
Taunt has no effect on these. Not once has I been able to catch a wounded
runner with taunt or provoke.
My original meatshield tanker had both taunt and provoke. My current fire
tanker has none of them. Initial running is much reduced lately, and the
defenders he duos with take down wounded runners. Usually they can be
one-shotted.

When I was hunting trolls with the wee stone/axe tank i'd run up near
the group, wait till the chicken ran off, then attack the remaining
ones.
Less incoming damage, and since mostly they weren't hassling people
there was no influence bonus from a grateful citizen to get for killing
them all anyway.

Which made it pretty useless when combined with status protection that
immobilized. Hell it didn't even reduce the mobs accuracy.
It IS supposed to be making them angry and goading them.

It doesn't pull well since it's AOE now and it doesn't cause a change in
ranged/melee attacks so it's only of any real use for taunting strays
off squishies and that is the "taunt-bot meatshield" most people seem to
think is the tanker's role.

A tanker that's actually going to fight and damage things doesn't really
have the power and slots to waste on taunt, especially at the low levels
since it's not going to be of any/much use for fighting.

Yeah it _might_ possibly affect a runner, but that's hardly worth giving
up an attack or defense for in the under 20 game.

Well one heal that only works on allies.

I've been having fun working on the new stone/em tanker on Victory.
Got a pretty good look for Magmoid - even took second in a costume

You misunderstand my meaning.
Storm is fairly unique this way in having a heal that helps the party
but not himself.

Kewl! I had a ball with Greg (tx for shlepping it with me Greg!) someone

even looking at the bar. Man, that defender is versatile, fun AND safe! :)

Yes but you CAN get a heal, and you will since it's also mez protection
for the ally you use it on and that WILL be vital later on unless you
only team with tankers/scrappers.

Defenders can be fun, but they can be frustrating too when you're used
to the higher damage some other ATs can do.
They are pretty versatile though and can make a nice change of pace.

I get all of that I can stand on usenet. I don't need to try and
educate someone who i'll likely only ever encounter once in the game.

Anyone who isn't familiar with the calculus of the way Tankers are built.

I have an Invuln/Super Strength Tanker and I didn't know any better than to
take Taunt. He's 16 and just starting to climb the Fitness ladder. Since I
got a lot of offensive atacks, I have defensive powers and Fitness both
crying for attention.

My question: Is replacing Taunt worth respeccing? (he's old enough to have
the freebie from christmas).

My Dark/Dark defender acts like a Blaster most of the time. He just has to
be on the lookout for anybody who's life is dropping and heal.

usual combat sequence is:

1) Snipe
2) Toss out a Tar Patch
3) Act like a blaster, healing as needed. I often integrate healing into my
normal cycling of powers, trying to keep everybody at full.

That's really up to you.
Do you actually use it or find it useful?
Are you suffering from having taken/slotted it instead of something
else?

Your answers to those two questions are really all you need to make a
decision.

Once you get Invincibility (which has a great built-in aoe taunt), it's
superfluous. Plus most tanker attacks have a built in taunt to some extent.
I just fire off TI, US & Combat Jumping (I'm a jumper) & run past as many
mobs as I can drag after me with Invincibility & then when I have as many as
I can handle (up to 20-30 whites/yellows) I just stand there (literally
Invincible :) & fire off a fully slotted Combustion every 5 secs or so as
the mobs pound away miss after miss futilely. Of course, Stamina has been a
huge boon at 20th I just made on the w/e - don't even have to rest between
battles. Dull Pain is great to have in a pinch. To summarise, I'm a
Invinc/Fire tanker & I only have 2 attacks:

Rpd (3)
*Scorch
TI (3)
DP (3)
CJ
US (6)
*Combustion (6)
Swift
SJ
Health
Invincibility (3)
Stamina

Now, Combustion is an amazing aoe attack to be able to pick up at just 10th
level & I can see what your problem is going to be with SS - no decent aoe
attack. Perhaps someone else can provide full tactics with Invinc/SS...?
Here's the best links1 I could find for tanker builds:
