Playstation2 or XBox

The Xbox is very much a gaming console despite what some people say. I'll tell you now that Halo is one of the best FPS ever. It's great to finally have a CO-OP game to again, deathmatches get a little tiresome after a while. In my apartment there are both a Xbox and a PS2. The only impressive game I've played on the PS2 thus far is Grand Theft Auto III (which is coming to the Xbox as well).

However, you may never see MGS2 or Final Fantasy for the Xbox. I suggest you go out and take a look at both consoles, play some of the demo's at a store if you can. Look at some screenshots and upcoming games. Decide for yourself.

Blah, Blah Blahh, Blahh, blahh blah blahh, blah blah.

Again this is not for me. A friend is buying it for his kids. Ages 4-6-11. He ask me what I though, I told him the Playstation might have more games. I thought it would be better to hear what you all had to say. So thanks for the responses.

Yeah, if it's for the kids, Xbox might be the way to go if you have the ca$h for it. Most likely, there's not going to be any 'Barbie' titles out for it so it's probably a guys' console.

A system lives or dies by its games.

Until the X-Box has a few months to settle in, it is too early to judge the strength of its software.

So its probably too early to pick one console over another.

ps2 or gamecube...cuz the xbox's controller is probably bigger than the kid's hands
:)

I don't claim to know anything about everything, I just tell people what I know.

XBOX or Gamecube. Go to http://www.anandtech.com and read their articles on the different consoles. PS2 suffers from graphics slowdowns in many games due to it's massively parallel brute force rendering method. XBOX ports show none of these slowdowns.

Lyrics. Wasted time between solos.

I thought the PS2 sucked. That's all I can offer. It looked like crap when I played it.

I think they should go to the store and demo them all. Let the kids decide.

XBox is probably not the best console for children. It has a gamepad that is pretty large and probably to heavy for the 4 year old to hold for the entire duration of a game. Come to think of it, I'm not sure the 4 year old would be able to press any of the buttons while holding the pad. Its games are more suitable for teens, and I think a number of them will be rated for midteens and older.

It probably does have the best graphics out of all three consoles, but I don't think the kids would be too concerned with that difference.

Playstation 2 on the other hand is more suitable for children, with a few titles for kids. Also, you could pick up a lot of the ps1 games for cheap. The ones that have great gameplay will keep the kids busy even though the graphics are likely to be comparibaly crap.

Gamecube... cheaper than the other consoles. The console looks kiddy friendly, with the bright colours and all. Most of the games will be aimed at the age range of the "specified" (pardon the cold unsocial term) children.

If your friend intends to buy the console for himself and leave the kids to play with the packaging and the box (The younger two might actually prefer this  ), XBox is the best choice.

Thanks everybody. It does sound like the XBox would be for teens or grown ups, while the Playstation would be more appropriate for younger children. Thanks again you been great help.

All I can tell you is I bought a PS2, played 20-30 hours on it, lent it to my friend for 2-3 months and then sold it to a guy and bought a new video card with the cash.

PS2 was for me the biggest disapointment.

Im am sorry for those of you that figure PS2 is a wast but just the proposition that MGS2 and final Fantasy will be excusively on PS is enough for me. The only reason why i would even consider playing a console over my comp games is for games like fantasy and the like. Like someone said previously buy the console that has the games you like...what is the point of buying the fastest console with the best graphics yet you dont like any of the software titles? My general rule of thumb is if first on comp worse on console and vise versa, so pick a console that has the games you want that you cant get on comp or are worse on your comp.

If you like RTS, or FPS then your best bet is probably what your using right now (hint), however i think that the console wins in RPG games...i dont think i need to offer any examples? I would be willing to debate this of course...

I would like to add a couple points here. First off, I would go with the PS2 (especially if kids are going to be playing). Not only can you play the great titles for the PS2 (Tekken 4 and FFX are f*ckin unbelieveable!!), but it also plays the almost unlimited amount of PS1 games, many of which are some of the best to have ever graced console gaming. Then theres the fact that its a DVD player as well. I know XBox does this also, but it lacks the solid title and upcoming title releases that really define a console gaming system. It is true taht XBox does have a few good titles, but noone can honestly debate that PS2, including all the old PS1 games, completely blows away the XBox.
As for graphics, the XBox does look a little sharper, but on an average TV, it is hardly noticeable if you are at all into the action of the game.

As for consoles being better for RPG's than the PC, I would certainly take you up on that debate. I understand the FF series is almost intended for consoles, but 7,8, and i believe 9 are all on the PC and while I'm not sure about X, i know FF11 is coming out on the PC as well. Then you have the classic (and my personal fav) Baldur's Gate series, which is just amazing for any D&D fan and RPG fan alike. After these you have your Asheron's Calls, Everquests, the upcoming World of Warcraft... the list of great PC RPG's just leaves consoles in the dust.

eh, i'll procrastinate later...
