We recently upgraded to cable 40mbps a week ago and then again a few days ago with the 'speed-boost' to 100mbps that our ISP offers.

The problem I am having is that my PC is still only getting around 30mbps.

About a week ago we upgraded to cable 40mbps and everything was fine for everyone. Speeds were as expected, around 20-30mbps when more people were using the net and I had 36mbps late when most of the others went to bed. We then decided to get the speed boost that our ISP offers which would boost our cable to 100mbps.

Once the boost had been applied I ran a speed test with the macbook I had in reach and got a speed of 87mbps and I thought GREAT! so I go to my PC, as it was my sisters macbook I used and ran a speedtest on it and only got a speed of around 30mbps, the same as if it wasn't boosted.

I tried using the macbook again, this time in the same place my tower is, and it again got around 80mbps. I did this with a few other devices in the house and they were all the same.
In total i ran the speed test with 2 macbook Pros, 1 toshiba laptop, my galaxy notw 4 and my PC and all of which got 70mbps+ on the speed test but my PC which maxed at 36mbps again.

What I have done/tried so far:
-speed through ethernet with laptop: 112mbps
-Moved entire PC right next to router and ran test again (WiFi) : 35mbps
-PC speed with Ethernet: 112mbps
-Updated the adapters driver
-Basically New PC built 1 month ago
- SSD OS boot - HDD Storage

Some notes:
-The tests were all done through WiFi
-My wireless adapter card: TP-Link TL-WN951N
-Running Windows 8.1
-All tests were done in same position as my PC so interference or distance from router shouldn't be the issue, I don't think?
-Modem is too far to run a ethernet cable from my room, so this will be an absolute last resort.
-Boosted speed is faster then expected, assuming actual speed is around 120-130mbps
-Distance or signal strength wasnt the issue as i moved pc right next to router and ran again.

Any help is GREATLY appreciated as I really want this fixed.
Thanks

I suspect your antivirus software is slowing you down. For example Bitdefender, on standard settings, can as much as halve your apparent internet speed because of its scanning. The solution is to lower the aggresiveness of it's scanning.

But also consider that the hard drives speeds will come into play, especially with antivirus scanning everything all the time. What drives are in your PC and had do they compare with the other devices you tested? You may decide an SSD upgrade is in order...

This PC I just built maybe a month ago so is basically new.
There is no anti virus and I have an ssd as mentioned

I did this earlier and got a speed of 112mbps as mention in thread, but I have never heard of a wifi card 'being to slow' is this actually possible that certain wifi cards cant actually process that much data, or could it be that this one specifically is faulty?

Yes it is definitely possible - though I wonder if a driver issue might be the cause rather than the card? Either way the good thing is that you've narrowed it down to the wifi being the issue.... so you know what you need to fix or upgrade

Is your wireless running pure N mode, or mixed mode (b/g/n)? This may make a difference since you have the higher speed available now.

Try it at pure N if you had it at mixed mode. Most newer devices can use wireless N nowadays, so no need for the mixed.

Just as an FYI, your TP-Link TL-WN951N adapter has been out since 2008... so might be time for a newer one.

Agreed - wireless 'n' wasn't available in 2008 I don't think, so chances are your wireless adapter needs upgrading
