What do you consider a good price? Outpost.com's web site says they have them for $240.

I don't remember the specific component(s), but for quite a while, there were shortages because cell phones used the same part(s) as optical drives.

It's just that they're a really popular drive right now. I waited about an extra week to get mine from amazon.com, but it was definitely worth it because I was able to use their $50 coupon. I'm still giddy I got it for $190 with free shipping :)

Yes there were serious IC shortages this year, affecting everything from computer parts to toys. For example Mattel lost about $50 million because of shortages.

It's just that the demand for them is high. (That drive is excellent!)

I just bought one at Onvia.com for $199 (Ihave not received it yet). I just looked at the Onvia site and it is now $209 and out of stock. Onvia has no shipping charges.

The 12/10/32 drives from Creative, TDK, and Iomega are also manufactured by Plextor. The Creative and Iomega drives even look just like the Plextor; TDK modified the tray slightly. They're priced about the same and may be a little easier to find. The software bundle varies a bit though, and the warranty will as well, but if it's just Plextor quality you're after and don't care who's name's stamped on the front, that may make it easier for you to get your drive. I just saw several Creative and TDK drives in local stores today when I was out shopping.

Depending on where you're located, you may be able to get the Iomega drive dirt-cheap. CompUSA is selling it at the outrageous price of $129 with a $30 rebate, and a lot of other vendors are matching the price.
