What are the popular heavy resource-consuming applications?

I ask this question seriously because I am wondering why people need and thus buy the powerful hardware they use today. :idea:

Main reason is games, most people my powerful hadware 4 gaming, video encoding ,etc.

most of them r games . MAYA,Flash, for 3D animations , Adobe products (mainly photo editing softwares )

and CAD programs
