Poll: What is a midrange price for a build?

hmmm....1 year? a good thinking there mate!
I have bought my system anly about 3 months ago, and I really2 needed a computer so I had other choices but to buy one.
I have bought HD3850 on a special sale and it costed only about $20 above 8600GT or HD3650. That is the good part.
The bad part is that the new GPUs are coming very soon and the prices for the current GPUs are going down!

My Friend has an opinion : A mid priced system is somethin' you would consider to buy, the best old ones, when the new ones are in sight or already but newly arrived on the market.

Mid range I woudl say is $800-$1000 USD. There's a WHOLE lot of good stuff you can get for low prices that aren't too far off from the high end. That and a decent low end PC would be in the range $400-500.

With most people i'd agree of $1000-$1500.

E8400 = 150 euro
Gigabyte EP35DS3R = 140 euro
2 GB DDR2 800 Corsair CL4 = 70 euro
Seagate 250GB 16MB = 70 euro
Antec Sonata III = 120 euro
Samsung S203B = 39 euro
Total =589 euro. (912.95 USD)
(1 euro = 1.55 USD)
That is so, if you buy it online, that means plus shipping fee, about 20 euro (31 USD more (within Germany).
If you buy it on a local store than it will cost you more, about 10-30% more.

I recently built a HD 3850 system for $700, I think midrange is anything that can handle current and next gen games at 1280x1024. Usually between $600 and $1000 for desktops (system only)

That is what I would consider Midrage, its not top of the line components, but they are current generation. Which right now means a 45nm cpu, a r700/G200 Graphics Card, P45 Mobo.

rofl thats a lot of answers and a lot of differences in opinion I'd say for everything except a monitor I'd go 1400-1800 with 2100 getting you all of it and a 22-4" flatscreen with 5 or under refresh of course I've only been building systems since my pre-release P2 400 lol you just have to shop around products even if you only buy your parts at newegg a lotta times they will have 2 or 3 prices on the same product or product level!

I think any system with multiple graphics cards is high end regardless of how much you spent on the build.

I would define a mid-range PC with above average graphics card and adequate memory, one that meets the recommended (not minimum) system requirements for current year's software (games).

Low-end PCs have have cheap graphics cards and minimum RAM. These PCs barely meet the requirements for todays demanding games. playable in lowest settings

As far as budget, it really varies and one person may be able to get a deal on some hardware, while others might have different needs for their build. So you really can't define it. You might have a vague average but it could easily fluctuate depending on the market.

Price wise, I think lowend = less than $1000, mid =$1000-$2000, high =$2000 or more.

For $1000 dollars you can get dual GPUs at the expense of most everything else. Or you can spend a little on alot. At mid, you have much more flexibility and can add some style to the PC. At highend, you can have your cake and eat it too.


Performance-wise, its a bit harder to judge. A lowend setup can get you some GREAT numbers in certain projects, but at the cost of everything else. Or it can be a medicore setup through anything.


I also believe there is a ultra low-end PC. Those are the very cheap PC's that barly meet reqs for todays games at the lowest setting and low resolution. Those machines are not ment to be used for games but more of a internet machine. These are $500ish and less. In fact, the computer I'm typing on is that type of machine. It runs EVERYTHING i need to when I need to, but games.

Price should never be a source of measurement when categorizing a class of hardware.

For example what's the difference from someone buying a new car like Mazda 3 hatchback for 19k and buying a used 2001 Mercedes SLK 320 for the same price?

I believe having 2 GPUs is definitely a different class of computer than single GPU regardless of the pricing. Performance may be difficult to judge because PCs have many criteria to fill that its impossible to find/build one that does everything at its best. As much as that's a problematic situation, performance is still a much better source of judgment than pricing. The highest performance hardware 6 months ago are 2/3 the price they are now.

A rig that is 5 years old and has 3 GPUs and has liquid cooling could probably be sold under $800, but that doesn't make it a low-end PC. Also you and I can build exact same PC with same hardware and still end up with different total price. Enough of difference to put them in different class if it were based on pricing.

i think alot of people who posted missed the point of "mid range"

if a system w\ an e8400, 4gb, 3870 etc etc is mid range... what is high end? and for that matter what is low end?

i guess you have to decide first if midrange represents performance or price, or both...

if you're spending more then $1000 on a build, i surely hope it isn't ''mid range''

So that's 602$ plus 80$ MIR which brings me to 522$ plus tax and shiping and this is canadian dollars.

This isn't a complete build. as far as an optical drive i had a dvd drive lying around.

With this system i can play crysis everything very high AAx2 on 1152x864. I couldn't go any higher res cause i'm using an old crt monitor(if you haven't figured it out i don't have much of a budget for computers😛)

I think that's a midrange system.

The "midrange" depends on what you are looking for
if you gonna use MS word and internet explorer then a 150$ pc is enough
if you are talking about gaming then 800-1200 can get you a very powerful system, a mid-high end system
i made a server pc for 500 with not good but extremely decent parts, nothing fancy though =D, my gaming pc cost me around 1800, with nice keyboard, mouse,........and watercooling
