Is this game worth spending time to know how to play it well? I enjoy this
type of game, but my time is limited.

You can get 'stuck in' with this one faster than the Patrician series
due to the ease of stooping to piracy. The Govenors also give you
tasks to complete where in Patrician you're pretty much on your own.
I'd say it's one of the better trade sims if you only have a few hours
here or there.

If you like a fame and fortune type game this is the nuts. I prefer it to
Sid's Pirates. The only thing I don't like abut it is that after you play
yourheart out for (game) years the AI makes the goals harder and harder and
eventually you get your ass kicked. eg. enemies are easier to kill in the
beginning, resources are more abundant and profits on goods are high. As the
game goes on the pirates get tougher, the resources become less frequent and
worst of all the profits are less and less.
But this is typical of programmers who think no one should be able to play a
game to the end.
