Ok, so let's say one has 2 monitors. Now, I have a Quadro DCC, and let's say I were to buy a PCI Matrox, would I be able to use both monitors simultaneously, each hooked up to separate vid card?

Really?? Cool. So w/ same comp, the Quadro DCC can display 3d smax for example on one monitor, and the other monitor displays ms word? That is so phat!

You tell Windows what their orientation is (primary on the right, left, above, or below the secondary). Then it extends your desktop. You can drag a window from one to the other, etc.

Cool, I never knowed that is possible, might want to do that to sometime...but then I need an extra videocard.

BTW: I own an AMD so I'm a rebel.

My case has so many fans that it hovers above the ground 😱 .

BTW, if you get a Radeon 8500, Vivo, Matrox, Geforce 2 MX, etc. You can display to two monitors with a single video card. I'm trying to find a second good monitor to use with my Radeon 8500. Then I can watch DVDs while I surf.

Flamethrower, weren't you just saying that the dual-monitor support on the Radeon 8500 is useless? Now you want to hook up to monitors? No offense there, but perhaps the dual-monitor support on the Radeon 8500 is like getting a second graphics card for free!

No, not exactly, cause it ain't dual DVI. Plus, I would rather focus all power of Quadro DCC on 3d s max for instance. Finally, Matrox does rape the R8500 in DVD:)

Oh, and when I said it was useless, most people don't use 2 monitors. I never expected to, but as it happens, I may be getting 2 free Compaq TFT5030 LCD's.

Oh yeah, and what I meant by seprate was like 1 screen does something totally different than the other...is that possible? I mean, like Quadro DCC plays RTCW, for example, and the other LCD displays word. How would the crossover work then?

You could do totally separate things like that, but most full screen apps are going to give you grief and they'll always display on the primary monitor (certain brand new apps might be different).

You can have things maximized on both screens, drag them from one to the other, etc. I usually turn off the second monitor for gaming because if you move the mouse to the far right (assuming your secondary monitor is on the right of the primary) you'll lose control of the game (it goes to the second monitor).

It's excellent for multitasking. Running dual monitors does cost about a 5% performance premium (or it did last time I researched it). Three monitors takes about an 8% performance premium, etc. So that's another reason to turn it off for gaming.

It's great to do your work on the primary monitor, then have IE fullscreen (for instance) on the secondary.

A lot of the guys at my work (the lucky ones) run a 21" monitor with 17" LCDs on both sides. That's really nice.

Oh, and incase you're about to bring it up, all the monitors can have independent resolutions (in 98, ME, and XP--not in 2K).

If you get a card with dual outputs you'll also benefit from the companies software which may allow other things like showing the same thing on both monitors (for if one is a projector), having the second monitor be a zoomed copy of the first, etc.

With all due respect (as I consider you a respectable guy), you'd be a fool to think that. Image quality is practically the same with all graphics cards (unless you have a scene with text where Temporal Filtering in the ATI Radeon 8500 smooths the scrolling effect). As for CPU utilization, the Radeon 8500 uses as little CPU cycles as a separate Hardware DVD Decoder card like the Hollywood card. IQ-wise the Radeon 8500 is with the the rest of the crowd (you can only improve image quality so much through hardware), but CPU utilization-wise, the R8500 crushes all other cards.

At one time I was running quake and whatnot on my 19" and had winamp with some visualization playing on the 17" next to me. Each at different resolutions. The OS (win 2k at the time) handles this all very well, but here's the wierd stuff I ran into:

1. My computer chose the first PCI card as the "primary" display rather than the AGP card like I wanted. Some bios will let you fool with this. At the time mine did not.

2. I had some problems using two dissimilar cards that each used nVidia chips. It's a problem related to the way their unified driver works. Both cards used the same driver, but in different ways. Mixing an nVidia card with a card of a different make (and driver) fixes this. There might be a way to make dual nVidias work...I didn't spend much time on the issue.

It's really pretty cool. Has anyone been using the virtual desktop manager in the windows XP powertoys? (free download from ms) It lets you run four desktops like linux KDE and gnome do.

I wonder how that would work with dual monitors. 8 desktops or just two pairs?
