Ok, I fixed the problem, and now I'm getting

1024x768, High Detail, no AA,

41.7 FPS

I achieved this by turning off "V Sync"; I don't know why, but it was dropping my FPS by 25%, which was borderline unplayable. My Catalyst OpenGL settings for V Sync was "Default Off". Do you think that there was some sort of conflict between control panel settings and game settings? What does V Sync actually do, anyway?

Using "default off" or "default on" is the equivalent of using Application preference. It will do what the application calls for.. if the application dosn't request anything, it will default to On, or Off, depending on what you have it set to.

V Sync is one of the most often confused concepts in the realm of graphics/video. It's almost a taboo subject for some... There are a few threads on here discussing V-Sync and its effects in great detail that you should read. Do a search.

nice results considering your processor + ram. I wonder what you could get after a cpu/mobo/ram update.

I was impressed also. I'm going to be upgrading to an A64 939 but I'm waiting for more 939 mobo's to hit the shelves. Hopefully the game will scream with my next upgrade.

Lol. I agree.

But I'm still not 100% satisfied with my Doom 3 performance. If you look at my first post you'll notice I pull 51 FPS. My friend JimmyDean has almost the EXACT same setup as I do, and he got 59 FPS on the 2nd run, with the same settings, and his core was only at 396 vs. my core of 412 (he gets artifacts in D3 at stock XT).

I'm not sure if it was a fluke or if we have some different settings I'm just not thinking of, but his system should not be doing better than mine. We're having a LAN soon and can play D3 side by side, at which time I will make all our settings EXACT and see how it goes. The only thing really different about our systems is that he now has 2 hard drives, and therefore might have a different page file setup, i.e. 2 page files, or a page file not on the windows drive or drive where Doom 3 is located... something like that. But that shouldn't really make a difference in FPS, maybe load times or something...

If you have a 9800PRO and he has an XT, I'll wager anything it's the 256MB. You've seen the performance yeilded on [H]'s benchmarks, right?

His 9800 pro is also flashed to XT, and no its not 256mb, and yes I'm aware of the benefits.

HaHa...Kill me I'm here! C'mon KILL MEEEE!!!!

I'm gonna oc my card and see what kind of fps I get. I'm guessing it won't make a difference since my cpu/ram are now my limiting factor.

Ok ran some quick benchies while packing (posting second run results [first run were consistently ~2fps lower));

Run at 800x600 Medium, with the Xp2000+ running stock FSB.

Ran both stock and OC'd (500/333) benchmarks (no artifacting).

Catalyst 4.8;

Stock: 32.5fps / 66.1 seconds
Oc'd: 35.3 / 60.8 seconds

Catalyst 4.9 (DoomDrivers);

Stock: 32.5fps / 66.1 seconds
Oc'd: 35.2 / 61.0 seconds

So, surprisingly enough for the R9600Pro there is little/no impact using the DoomDrivers. They must be geared towards other models or maybe AA/AF or something not exploited here.

No time to run performance mode checks.

Running Doom 3 on my TI-4600 card at 800x600 high detail. No driver tweaking not sure if AA is on or off, what ever is default.

I average about 30-32 FPS hitting a high of 40 FPS in some places, with multiple enemies on the screen (3+) drops to just above 20 FPS.

I guess not bad, for an old DirectX8 AGP4x card.

Nice machine you got there. Respect.

I'm still waiting for the game to be released here (Ireland), I guess I might have to settle for 800 x 600 for the moment based on my specs.

Hay, i don't have D3 yet, and my BFG card won't OC past 390 on GPU, and i have to up my AGP v to 1.65(does that hurd the card?). But i am curious if ocing exploits those transisters on the card that have never been used b4? Has anyone seen any anomalies? Is the game as "glitchy" as FarCry? From what i've seen it looks alot better and runs alot faster all things considering.

yeah it runs fine mate, not seen ne bugs yet at all really. n yeah the engine is much smoother. i can run D3 in 1600x1200, can only run far cry in 1280x1024, most settings in high mind.

Well, looking at ur sys performance of doom3, u are qualified enough now to join my people-to-frag list. Dont worry groth2757 is at position 1, so u ll be the 2nd to get vaporized. :evil:

Well hopefully i will get the game in a couple of weeks(no cash right now, lol spent it all on computer and my vast array of hobbies). Is the multi any good in D3?

Anyway nothing impressive:

1024X768 High with V-Sync = 22.3fps
1024X768 High w/o V-Sync = 27.4fps
800X600 High with V-Sync = 30.4fps
800X600 High w/o V-Sync = 41.1fps

I guessed Vertical Sync is not an option.
I'll ask my boss to order stronger stuff...
Can't wait to see my system suffering...

I recommend to anyone who has V-Sync enabled to turn it off and see what kind of performance increase you get. I'm getting a 33% increase in performance by turning it off, and I'm not getting any "tearing" or weird choppiness. I was able to go back up to 1024x768 and I am still getting a high average framerate. At this point I'm happy with the setup.

Now I need to work on getting rid of this annoying "click" sound that the game keeps generating, it happens constantly when I'm moving around; people with Audigy soundcards are reporting this problem, although my system uses Soundstorm. None of this matters anyway because the Doom sound engine uses the CPU and not the sound card, although the sound is still output via the sound card. This may be some sort of DirectSound conflict, but I gotta fix it soon because it's really irritating.
