Oh, I failed to notice that. Yes that is odd... odd but cool!

Me: are you saying I can't provide?
Me: cause I know I can provide.
Me: oh and I can provide money too😉

Hmm.. well, when I play the game it runs a without the "harddisk lags" to the benchmark extent, even with the ultra-extreme quality (shadows) mod it is playable. The benchmark sometimes performs these harddisklags (typically for a lack of ram/gpu ram) like farcry does when played with only 512mb of ram.

when I run it in:
800x600 - medium 63fps
1024x768 - medium 40fps
1024x768 - high 35.3fps
1152x864 - high 29.4fps (normally my all games res.)

Perhaps I flashed the bios wrong, a while ago I was reflashing because of god-knows-what, and I have not been able to overclock since then, (exept for the 9700pro speeds of course)

Just a few extra benches in a few different modes.

All timedemos are ran in 1024x768 with Doom3 quality set at high and no shadows or Vsync.

Performance - 53.1 fps
Balanced - 57.8 fps

Now with VSync

Performance - 53 fps
Balanced - 39.3 fps

Now with VSync disabled and the graphics card set to High Quality.

High Quality - Balanced - (8xAnisotropic) - 48fps

High Quality - High Quality - (2AA)(8xAnisotropic) - 42.8fps

High Quality - High Quality - (8xAnisotropic) - 48fps

Regards....

Apologies Phial i should have mentioned.

The only thing different i can see between performance and balanced in the graphics card menu is the setting

Texture pref - Performance/High Quality
Mipmap detail level - Performance/High Quality

If i want to use FSAA or Anis Filtering i have to switch to custom mode and alter it or increase the overall quality level to high or optimum. So i posted a few of those above also.

Regards..

When you get the extra performance going to Balanced, do you find any visual difference?
Seems to me it would actually be lower, as if they labeled Balanced as Performance and vice-versa.

To be honest its quite a difficult game to pick out any real visual enhancement with it being so dark during general play.I will attempt to find a clear level and have a look around on one of the lighter areas and see if i can see any difference. To be honest it looks really good on both.
I understand what your saying Eden and its strange that it gives a slight boost in frames but when i played the game initially i was using Hercules 4.1 Cats, which is the latest they support.I then switched to Ati's 4.7 Cats and the menu slider etc remained the same as the Hercules ones.
There dosent seem to be many people using the 9800XT so it's been hard finding a comparison.

I have just tried to replicate this scenario using Aquamark 3.After three runs on each setting the balanced setting is yielding close to a 500 mark improvement over the performance setting each time.I'm not sure if that is at all relevant to what iam getting in Doom3 but again i would expect it to be lower.
I will attempt to look for visual differences on Doom3 tomorrow when i get home.

Find any game where the same phenomenon happens and look for its lighter areas or where sharp textures appear. DOOM III has too good graphics in even Low Quality that it can be hard to decipher differences. On THG's D3 benchmark article, they point out some of the visual differences in the 4 quality modes. An easy point of reference is the magazines because they use a lot of different pixels to create a detailed page.

Ok that makes sense.I'll just head for the canteen area at the beginning of the game as it's quite near the beginning.
As i recall thats the area that was used to supply the four quality setting comparisons in the article you refer to.The differences on the kitchen worktop and as you say the magazines were quite apparent as i recall.
I will re read the article when i get home and and start from there. Thanks for the suggestion....

you need to go up close and look at texture detail, and try also to note how far away textures start to degrade in detail as well.

when i set texture quality to "medium" (middle setting)in control panel, the textures on High look liek they are from Medium, its quite a large different

now, there IS a bug with ATI cards where if you set AF in the control panel, it reduces performance by alot.
It's not a bug.

Ok i have loaded up and old saved game and gone back to the kitchen area near marine command to try and find any differences in visual quality.

Having gone back and forth half a dozen times trying performance V Balanced to get my eyes used to it i have found that the Balanced quality setting when looking at the kitchen worktops is markedly better, this i can see easily and know its better without a doubt.
The Magazines are somewhat different and it's harder to tell the difference.Hand on heart the only one where i can definetly see a difference is on the 'Booty' magazine on the table near the Super Turkey Puncher arcade machine.
It's difficult to see at which point the image begins degrade and this is mainly due to the lighting.
I then re tested on the timedemo just to make sure i had not made any mistakes and i still get the 5-6 fps increase on Balanced settings.

Regards....

Is the bug you describe when setting AFiltering in the control panel giving a big performance hit unique to the control panel only? Does leaving it on App Preference and enabling it in game menus negate the performance hit?
Just for my own information..Thanks.

You have an interesting case, indeed. Must be some optimization problem. Oh well, if you gain and get better image quality, stop whinin' and start fraggin'!

dearest comrade.

Which one of those did you use? Obviously quailty lowering settings... which is lame, just lower your awesome settings:)

My question was simple... there are 5 modded configs on that site. WHICH DID YOU USE?!

Also... you have aniso in the cfg set to 16... yet you have 16x qual aniso forced in CP. I believe this may be additive, either that, or the CP just overrides the config file.

You also have 4x AA on in CP, and 2 in the cfg file. Again it's either additive or CP is overriding.

Dumb.
