Question Power for rx5700

I am still relatively new to building PC's and I had a question regarding installing my GPU. My current PC had a rx580 8gb installed before I decided to upgrade because my friend gave me his old GPU after he upgraded, which was a rx5700. When using the rx580 it had 8 pins for power and my PSU had a 6+2 pin cable so I've been using that. The PSU unit is a 650w bronze rated PSU (EVGA if that matters). For my new GPU would I need to get a cable that splits into an 8 pin and 6 pin power supply or do I need a separate 6 pin cable to plug into my PSU that would be in addition to my current 8 pin one. And if both options are viable is there one that's safer. Any help would be appreciated.

Do not split a PSU cable, splitters are often cheaply made (not made to withstand the amperage that can flow through it) and can be dangerous.

That said, you need another cable coming from your PSU if your existing cable does not have what you need. Your PSU should have some with the appropriate cables.

Got it thank you. I see my PSU has two VGA slots each for a PCI-E cable which are 8 pins. Is it ok to use another 6+2 and just plug in the 6 pins and leave 2 hanging or do I need to get a 8 to 6 pin one?
