Power supply beeping during gaming??

I bought a new system a little over 9 months ago, and every now and then, I get a steady beeping about 1 second apart when graphics in games get intense. The beeping seems to be coming from my power supply, but I can't be 100% sure.

Aspire X-Navigator case with 500w PS (came with case)
Asus P5GDC-Deluxe MB
Intel P4 3.4
ATI X850XT PE (256mb PCIE)
4 gb ram (Samsung)

My current guess is that my video card is pulling too much from the PS and that is causing it to beep. If I lower my graphics, then the beeping seems to go away, but occasionally comes back if the graphics get intense. If I alt-tab to windows, the beeping stops. I don't think heat is an issue because my basement is pretty cool. Any thoughts?

Thanks.

Sounds to me like your CPU is over heating and the beep is warning you that the CPU is getting too hot. It is probably set in the bios to beep to warn you.

I had the same thing happen to me. But I set my bios to warn me and at a LAN party at someones house (which was quite warm) it started to beep. I took the cover off and he set up some fans and the cpu temp went down and the beeping stopped.

There are some programs you can download that will monitor your cpu temps so you don't have to go into the bios. Next time it beeps check the cpu temp. I am pretty certain that is your problem. If that is what it is then you will then have to figure out why it is over heating. You might just need to clean the dust out of the computer. Good luck

I have been running Asus probe, and the CPU temp seems ok. I also disabled the CPU monitor in the BIOS, and the beeping still continues. When I stick my head near the case when the beeping occurs, it seems to be the PS. I will look at maybe getting a new PS. Any recommendations on brand/model??

Thanks for quick responses!

Heat is probably the cause, but the psu is probably too small for the load, so it overheats. Antec, Enermax, Seasonic, Hyper all make good psu's.

I have a Navigator-X case and I like it a lot. Everything runs at cool tempts with all the fans that are provided. Anandtech had an article on it. I have the Aspire 680 wt psu in mine and haven't run into any problems, but they aren't the best by any means.

Just an idea, it might be a voltage going out of spec. Sometimes monitoring software will beep when that happens.

MOST PSU's do not Beep. What is set to beep during stressing activities is the temp monitor of the CPU. Depending on where the speaker is, it may sound like its comming from up top, where the PSU is. After you play an intense game and the beepings start, restart your computer and check your CPU temps inside your bios. If its too high, say 65c - 85c, there is your problem. If the temp is normal, open your case and listen for the beeps.

Although it is always 11.9 rather than 12.0, I have yet to see anything but that out of my Aspire PSU on the 12v rail that ABit EQ monitors. It seems quite solid, and is the same wattage, so it might be the same model you have. I have a 7600GT, and never get any guff out of my PSU.
Try to verify if it is actually the PSU. Your mobo and GPU may have alarms that are going off. It does sound like a thermal problem. Is your case airflow good?

I appreciate the feedback guys. After a little more digging, I decided to replace the stock Intel cooler, with a Zalman cooler. What a difference! My previous "normal" operating temp was 40-42 at the windows desktop, and now it is a solid 31! Also, gaming is no longer an issue. The games that used to cause the beeping, run really smooth now.

Hey there neibour.Change the power supply as it is probably getting too much draw from it.I have a 520 watt psu that seems to be ok for now,but it is only a couple months old.I do plan on upgrading to a 600watt or more by x-mas.but ya it sounds like too much juice is being pulled from it.Goodluck.

during the 440BX period my bro's computer did this, it was a generic power supply, but it would beep (two tone - alarm style) when the graphics got intense (this was the 8500 - a beast in those days, it can still actually run some nice games) it would do the beeping, but it was a motherboard feature we couldn't disable, it was the voltage getting too low, you might be having the same problem, a more powerful supply should solve the problem.

After nine months everything is full of dust and one of the components is overheating.

It's the Prescott.

Blow the dust out of all the heatsinks. Problem will go away.

he said that his temperatures were fine

I have been running Asus probe, and the CPU temp seems ok

many other things can be stressed during gaming, including such things (other then the mentioned) GPU temp, NB temp and other such things, which the motherboard can't detect, and the only alarm's a motherboard will not allow you to disable are the critical ones (CPU temp can be disables, so can all other temps) but i have never seen one that allows you to disable voltage alarms, and that is how i reached the conclusion... which i said
a more powerful supply SHOULD solve the problem.

NOT

"Go buy more powerfull powersupply".

he also said he disabled the CPU temperature alarm and the beeping continues.

i have reached my conclusion based on reason and experience. not employment.

and i am not anyone's employee, i'm still a student
