What are the sockets on the back of my power supply for? (My first build)

its for power cables that connect from your psu to power hard drives. its just called a 5p (or 5-pin) sata connector.

to power hard drives. hard drives have 2 sata connecters. power and data.

I didnt receive a 5p sata cord

probably doesn't come with one. most power supplies dont. just gives you an option to buy the connectors if you need them.

power supplies already have sata power connectors built in. those ports are probably to give you an option for an excessive amount of drives.

So in order to power my harddrive I need one?

no, updated last post while you typed that. basically you will probably never need those ports in the image.

no, somewhere in that chunk of wiring coming out of the psu should be:

if the other cable (the one in my post above) is not with the power supply you are missing those 5p sata connectors. maybe you bought one that was previously opened or misplaced them.

gotcha. so you are missing those cables. if you cant find them, either buy replacement cables or return the psu. like i said maybe you got an open box return by mistake from wherever you bought it.

cant use those those. the 2nd pic has the sata power, but your missing the other end which is called a molex connector. your psu does not have that output based on the pictures. still missing the parts that should have came with your psu.

Ah, I see. So once I connect the 5p to my power supply & hard drive, the hard drive will work correctly?
