Hey guys i have a Thermaltake TR2 W0070RUC 430W Power Supply it only has one 6pin and I need two for my XTX 6850 Radeon card. I looked into it some and since I dont use the molex connectors I noticed there was two leads coming out of the PSU. I went ahead and measured the volt and it was at 12v just like the 6pin. I then took a old power supply unit and cut the motherboard connector so I had a 6pin.. then one row was all 12v and the other row of 3 was ground... It worked but is there anything I should know about this being a bad idea? I didnt know what the molex connectors supplied as far as amps. Output was listed as:

+3.3V@20A, +5V@24A, +12V1@14A, +12V2@15A, -12V@0.3A, +5VSB@2A

I did have to cut the corners on the inside pin so it would fit the 6pin for PCI-E.. razor blade FTW

wired like this (two grounds to one at the 6pin. Then two molex grounds to the two left at 6pin.

ground ground ground ground (molex)

Then one power at molex to two at the 6pin... then the last power at molex to one at 6pin

Ya mine has two... newer design i imagine. I searched and others have ran into this same problem. XTX included a image that said to plug two different 6pin connectors in ... they dont want you to have a splitter going from one 6pin --> to Two 6pins.. so doing it like this or having a nice connector would have been nice(not ruining your 5year warranty on your PSU) XFX HD-685A-ZCFC Radeon HD 6850 1GB 256-bit DDR5 PCI Express 2.1 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFireX Support Video Card was the unit i picked up from egg for 120

get a molex-to-pci-e 6 pin connector (usually 2 molexes into 1 6 pin).... it's the safest bet.

If your graphics card has two 6 pin connectors, it is because it needs them.
I imagine it is some sort of overclocked version of the 6850 which normally only requires one.
If your psu was strong enough, the use of a molex to 6 pin pci-e adapter would work.
Many graphics cards with two connectors include them.

The problem is with the psu.
It is a tier 5 unit(not recommended/replace asap) unit on this list.

That means, among other things that the output capability is suspect.
It would be unusual for a 430w psu to be able to drive two 6 pin connectors, and that only from a top quality psu.

I suggest you replace the psu with a quality unit of 500w or more.
My short list of quality units would include seasonic, antec, pc p&c, xfx and corsait.
Expect to pay $50+

You could take a chance and use a molex adapter. But if there is insufficient power available, you will see strange operation of your card at best, and damage to all the parts connected to the psu if it fails badly.

Ya the seasonic M12 for 90 is the best bet it looks like.. my NEW Thermaltake TR2 is on your list at a poop psu 🙁 I thought these newer cards didnt need much power haha.. crap

Does 1 x 6-Pin, 1 x 6+2-Pin mean it has two PCI-E 6pin... I would think so... idk what that plus 2 means. XFX Core Edition PRO550W (P1-550S-XXB9) 550W for $66 seems like a deal...

A 6 pin lead can deliver 75w, a 8 pin lead can deliver 150w.
A 6+2 lead has a 6 pin connector, but there is an additional 2 pin part that you can use if you need an 8 pin connector.

As you can see, the 6+2 pin on the right can still be plugged into a graphics card that just needs the 6-pin connector, it just lets you add the extra 2 pins if the graphics card requires an 8-pin connector. It means the PSU maker doesn't have to have separate 8-pin and 6-pin cables.

No, it's the whole system that's drawing 230W from the wall socket. That means the system itself is pulling less than 200W from the PSU (some power is lost in the PSU itself). The 6850 is only responsible for part of that.

Tom's review tried to isolate the power draw of the 6850 by comparing it to the same system with integrated graphics:

A PCIe 1.x/2.0 slot can provide 75W, while a PCIe 2.1/3.0 slot can provide 150W. A 6-pin connector provides 75W.

So in an old motherboard and with just a single 6-pin connector it would be limited to 150W. In a newer motherboard it would have 225W available, much more than it could ever draw. I suppose they added the second 6-pin connector to make absolutely sure it would always have plenty of power available for overclocking on older motherboards. But it's really not necessary. My XFX Radeon HD 6850 Black Edition (=factory overclocked and meant for enthusiasts like me that'll push it even higher) did just fine with a single 6-pin, even in my old system which didn't provide 150W via the PCIe slot.
