My wife told me our computer stopped working the other night without a reason or strange noises.

Clicking the power on/off button on front of the machine doesn't do anything. Thinking that it was the power supply I opened the case and noticed that a LED indicator on the mobo is still on. When I turn the power off and then on behind the power supply the LED comes back on and the fans move just a tiny bit.

My computer runs an Athlon XP1800 on a Asus A7A266.

Could it be that the power supply is dead, even when that little LED still on?

Or could it be the on/off switch? (but my computer also turns on using the keyboard and this doesn't work either).

Any help will be appreciated.

Several things. There is a solid state relay in the power supply that turns the power on and off. The power switch is a momentary contact switch (doesn't stay on once the button is released) and that signal is suppose to turn the power supply on. If you can find the connector on the motherboard with the PWR SW or power switch written on it then remove the connector and short the two terminals that it connects to momentarily with a screw driver to see if it will boot. If it does, the switch is bad or broken and if it doesn't, well then, the news is all bad. If you don't have a tester to check the PS with you could pull it out and take to a local shop and have them test it for you. I have a tester that is just a simple connector that hooks up on the main power lead with an LED that lights up if the PS is good. They probably wouldn't charge you much to just test it. If you have to replace the PS, that XP1800 system will need a 300Watt minimum PS especially if you have some extra "stuff" in that case also (fans,CD burner,2 drives, etc.). I ran an XP1800 on a 250watt for about 6 months but it finally s_hit the bed.
