took me a while, but i (re)found a reasonably reputable source on the matter, it's two years old, so maybe things have changed... (seeing as i am not a member of pci-sig, we're stuck with this) link

a slot with a capacity of 1.5kg or 3.3lbs should hopefully support the gtx 495 when both spec and card are finalized. And the 300w bus power is nothing to sneeze at, especially seeing as the gtx 495 will require it.

PS - notice the speculation of intel making performance graphics cards?:)

It is bullshit.I wont wast my money for that. What happen to the other PCI cards when I plug it? and as the other guys said it wont hold second and third cards.I can put a Pepsi can or shampoo bottle under them.

What idiot would get a massive 200 to 500$ videocard and NOT Screw it in.

And seriously, I don't think a case has an issue as long as the videocard fit's in it and how does the PCIE break if the card is secured by 1 or 2 screws....

That pointless idea taken out by Powercolor... to my experience they can't even make a low end R3450 with a fan that doesn't melt and die after 2 months... (Had to RMA 30 of those for DVR's) grrrr.

couldn't i also acomplish this with... a 79 cent dowell from home depot or lowes cut down to the right length maybe splurge on a few rubber ends for em and save myself about 8 bucks plus shipping?

[citation][nom]IzzyCraft[/nom]the gpu's get faster and smaller but also now getting more power hungry and hotterI'm waiting for everything to be tri slot graphics cards lol. This is also why you should always secure your graphics cards with screws. Also didn't the 8800 ultra come with like a hdd cage brace to hold it up.[/citation]
I wouldn't mind seeing a return to single slot cards. It just seems like they're not trying as hard because everyone is fine with double slot. I but if they worked at it, they could make a 5770 or a 260 with a single slot cooler.

I've had a MB where all the solder points for the PCI slot came loose after a while. These new video cards that weigh a lot did concern me. Why did I never thought of looping a ziptie to support them a little bit? I'll get right on that.

I actually agree with this, I've seen many a PCIe slot busted due to torsion on the connector.

I don't think a silly prop is the solution though. Rather, sturdier PCIe connectors and a more rigid brace to the PC backplate.

There is a easier solution, put the tower sideway on the ground. So simple.

[citation][nom]frye[/nom]Whatever happened to technology getting faster and smaller?[/citation]

sure chipsget smaller ,but they push speeds up constantly which pushes up the size of the cooler , not forget they also increase the ammount of on board ram constantly too though i'm not sure thios "power jack" is the best solution for the ever wight increasing graphic cards , i think a better route would be for case manufature's to add adjustable and removable support braces to the hard drive cage on thier cases that way they can be height adjusted for differnt cards or removed altogether if not needed, given teh length of these cards the only two places i coyudl thionk of apply support braces to are the hard drive cage or the side door, but since the side door has to be opened offten that really only leves the hard drive cages as apossible place to set up asupport system for beefy vid cards.

The weight can be a problem and this does sound like a pretty good solution for it, if you're concerned. The new CM 690 II case has kind-of the same thing, actually. Looks pretty cool.

[citation][nom]frye[/nom]Whatever happened to technology getting faster and smaller?[/citation]

It did, so when it got 50% smaller they packed the cards with 4 times the chips. Sometimes more. Too bad the egg could break your slot before properly fried. ops

my cm 690 ii advanced has a bracket that goes over the gfx card holding it up and allowing a little 80x15mm fan to be mounted on it... it's a little awkward, but seeing the bulk of my 5870, i'm kinda glad it's there...

I relocated recently, and before I left, I shipped a brand new PC with a Sapphire Radeon HD 6970 in the PCIx16 slot across the world. You will notice that the card is a beast. When it arrived, I turned it on to find that the graphics were glitching all over the place. I had to reseat the card multiple times in the slot, and then not bump the chassis to make sure that it didn't lose contact with the slot. Even now, it is wobbling and unstable and I am not sure if it's permanently damaged a new motherboard or not. Either way, my next card will be much smaller, and that new card will come sooner rather than later at this rate.

These things are getting too huge, period. They are out-of-spec with what motherboards, mounted vertically, are capable of handling.
