Which would you recommend powerline or mesh (I’ve got a 1957 typical ranch style home). And which product would you recommend?

If you have good wiring I would go with powerline...otherwise go with a good mesh system.
Bad wiring will result on low speeds or complete signal lost.

TP-Link AV1000 or NETGEAR PL1010-100PAS if you just need one Ethernet port at the end or TP-Link AV2000 if you need two Ethernet ports.
TP-Link TL-WPA8630 Kit, if you want the option of WiFi.

Remember that powerline performance will depend on the quality of your home’s electrical wiring.
Also a router could play a part on the performance and speed.
