Not sure what your point is there. Fact is, Intel could have released an 8-core desktop chip
a looong time ago, either the 3930K initially, or the IB update. They didn't because there
was no need to. The HW-E series is nothing groundbreaking in this regard. All they've
done is bring the core count up to what it should have been two years ago. As others
have said, we ought to be on to 10+ core desktop chips by now.

The mainstream platform is limited even with just two cards; what was the point of developing PCIe 3.0
if the move from X58 to what we have now has been a standard downgrade from x16/x16 to x8/x8?

The current mainstream chips have far too few PCIe lanes IMO, while the newer top-end models need
to have a lot more to keep up with technical demands in all areas. HW should have 24 or 32, HW-E
should have 64 or 80.
