Prime 95 keeps exiting after a few minutes but no crash in windows

Hi guys,

I'm relatively new to overclocking.

My system:
i7-8700k on MSI Z370 A-pro motherboard
32 gb ddr4 ram
duke gtx 1080ti
evga clc 280 with 4 noctua ippc 3000 on push/pull config

I'm currently at 4.8 Ghz (all 6 cores) with 1.195 Vcore.
AVX of -3, and LLC mode 4 (straight line across)
I ran a prime 95 version 26.6 small fft and I maxed out at 57C. This test setting ran for 8 hours straight with absolutely no problem.

Now I want to optimize my overclock by finding the lowest minimum Vcore that I need for 4.8 Ghz. So I tried values like 1.19, 1.185, or 1.18....

For these values of Vcore, my pc still boots up normally and I'm able to run any games smoothly. However, when I run prime 95, it runs fine for about 30 minutes and then suddenly exits (the prime 95 application just exits although I didn't hit the "Stop" or "Close" button).
There was no crash or BSOD whatsoever..... prime just simply exits....

What is the problem that I'm seeing? Is this some kind of throttling?
Anyway to improve my overclock?

TBH, you've got a decent all core OC with very nice voltage, and excellent temps for Prime stressing. There isn't much more to tweak. You can try bump the LLC up one notch, and try the lower voltage, but keep an eye on the temps.

Apart from that, the exits for Prime seem like a glitch, so maybe update to latest version. It could be linked to the lower Vcore, but then Prime should fail a CPU test as opposed to just exiting. That's the purpose of it.

Right you articulate my problem very well. That was exactly what I was wondering.
Because when I tried vcore values like 1.7 or 1.65, prime would run for like 1 minute and windows would crash, I would get a blue screen. This way I know for sure my oc was not stable.
However for those upper values, prime just simply exits after 20-30 minutes and the system remains running perfectly fine. That's why I was confused

Well, ideally you don't really ever want to set your vcore manually over 1.4 and less sometimes with Intel chips. 1.651.75 would be very risky.

On auto setting sometimes, as cores boost up, you can sometimes get spikes in voltage, and this is normal. The spikes will sometimes hit 1.4-1.5.

Use HWMon and watch out for min/max voltage. Try the LLC up one notch, and look out for any crazy looking spikes. Using LLC can overvolt sometimes, so be careful with it.

As far as I'm concerned you're good to go. Try the prime update, and see how you get on. With some fine tuning you may be able to get 4.9/5 with voltages between 1.2-1.3+.
