This may seem fairly trivial to all of you who are so much farther, but
here goes.

I am having trouble with the Dire Spider in chapter one of the OC. It is in
Beggar's nest (I think), the second of the quests that Lady Aribeth (sp??)
gives to you.

My character is a L6 elven fighter that I am grooming to be an arcane
archer, and I currently have the thief as a henchman.

I have cleared out about half of the zone, and started on the serpent cult
headquarters, in the basement of which is the Dire Spider. Should I finish
off the rest of the zone before I try the spider?? That might get me to
10,000 XP (I am at 9XXX right now). Should I get a different henchman?
Maybe get a fighter-type henchman and stand back and use arrows?

Quite. I think most people who've played the OC remember that
particular battle well.

Advisable, yes. The spider is the boss of the crypt.

Also advisable. For fighting the dire spider, your best bet is probably
either Daelan or Boddynock.

It's not just you - that spider is a tough fight at that point in the story.
Your strategy sounds good to me. I think I had Tomi at the time. I spent a
lot of the fight running away to get healed and returning to knock off a few
more HP. It took a while but letting Tomi and my animal companion (I was
playing a ranger) get squashed while I shot at it with a bow was a good way
to stay alive long enough to run off.

Best wishes

Ahhh, that would be why it is so hard. Although I am surprised at the jump
in difficulty from the Cult Minions to the spider. Oh well, if it was too
easy it would be, well, too easy.

Hmm, don't know why I didn't think of running/healing before. Must be lack
of sleep or something like that.

I think you'll find they're in the Trade of Blades.

Sweet. I think I might just spend a bit more time wandering around the city
core if I get a chance to play tonight...

Here's a tip for you for later in the game: Since I played a wizard, I
naturally wanted a fighter-type to supplement, so I thought Daelan would
be the best choice. Luckily I gave Grimgnaw a try, and it turns out he's
excellent in combat. You might want to test him and see if you like him
as your front man, while you fire arrows.

check out the walkthrough on game banshee if you get stuck. I found it
helpful and informative as to problem areas. it won't solve all problems,
but helps out quite a bit. they have walkthroughs for both expansions and 3
premium modules as well.

Thanks for the help guys!! I finally made it through Beggar's Nest last
night. Once I got the hang of using the stone of recall to heal and then go
back, the Dire Spider was a cakewalk.

The Yuan-Ti (Gulun, IIRC) was not. It took many, many re-dos before she
went down. And when she did, she want down fast.

In the process, I got my character one step closer to the Arcane Archer
class, by grabbing the level of wizard that he needed. I am unsure how long
it will take him to get there though. His intelligence is kinda low (10)
and I took an Exotic weapon proficiency at one of the lower levels. I am
contemplating re-rolling him with some more balanced stats.

Ummm, off the top of my head, I have a fairly high Dex (17 I think) an
adequate Strength (13 or 14) a 10 in intelligence, and I don't remember the
others.

If you don't want to take the time to re-roll a character, you can adjust
attributes with console commands.
press the ` key
type "DebugMode 1" (wthout quotes throughout)
type "SetINT 12" enter
type "DebugMode 0" enter to close the console.

If you want to keep your character honest, you can take away a point from
another attribute for every one you add.

That spider is nasty. Three words: Stone of Recall. You can use it
mid-battle.

While it is good to use during a battle, be careful when you use the portal
to return as it will put you back on the spot you transported from and the
spider usually does not roam far from that spot. Many a time I tried that
the spider was attacking my character before I had a chance to fight back.
In older versions of the OC you could duck through a door to another map and
you could sleep/recover but with recent updates the spider follows you
through. If you have 3 or 4 traps, set them up before hand and they will
slow the spider down a bit so you can get a bit further away before using
the stone of recall. Sometimes the traps turns the spider back but poison
ones don't seem to work on it.

So, don't use the portal to go back. Slower but you aren't dumped
right next to him.
