Problem W/ Missing Timecode Using Final Cut Pro HD

Hi,
I'm a new user of Final Cut Pro HD, and I had a question for anyone
familiar with that product, or just the type of video editing problem
I'm experiencing. I'm editing about a dozen tapes of video footage,
and on some of those tapes, for some reason, no timecode is appearing.
In other words, I can see the video, but there's just a blank in the
section where the timecode should be, and, when I'm trying to capture
footage from those tapes, Final Cut Pro just brings up a message
reading "waiting for timecode" and never captures anything.
My Question: Has anyone experienced this problem? Do you have any
suggestions for how to overcome it?

I would appreciate any advice.

Thank you very much,
Neil Orman

Are your "tapes" miniDV, VCR, betaSP, Digital8, or???

If your tapes are miniDV or Digital8, you might have a gap in the
filming of those tapes, thereby producing a timecode gap. This resets
the time code to 00:00:00;00 and then FCP might be getting confused..

Thanks for the response, Richard. The tapes are mini-DV. I don't think
the problem is a gap in the timecode in this case, because no timecode
is appearing from the beginning of the tapes all the way to the end.
I've had many tapes with the situation you described, where there's a
gap in the tape causing the timecode to reset. But the issue here
seems different: no timecode appearing anywhere on the miniDV tapes.
Let me know if you have any thoughts.
I appreciate it.

The only time that I can think of when this happened to me was when I
was trying to capture video on a Digital8 camera. I was putting in
older Hi-8 tapes and I got this same message. After I put in regular D8
tapes, the message went away.

Perhaps this might be a problem with your camera? Have you played the
tape on your camera, and turned on the timecode display?

Have you tried these tapes in another camera and turned on TC to makes
its working? How were the tapes recorded? miniDV or DVCAM? They both
use the same size tape, but they are different formats. I'm starting to
think there's some kinda problem with your tape/camera.

Sorry I couldn't help more.

That's a strange one. If you are using a DV preset and Firewire device
control.. you should definately see TC. However.. it is a pretty blatant
error.. Almost like there should be a setting somewhere.. I have FCPHD.. but
I haven;t seen that one.. capturing from DV/DVCAM
