hi
iv just installed a mobile xp2500 barton into my machine
and easytune4 gives me a reading of 804mhz. every thing seems slow.
please help

GA-7VAXP with newest bios and drivers
512 pc2100
120gig wd
9800pro
was using xp2000

Your current fsb is 100, with a multiplier of 8. You need to change these. To start with, ibelieve you have to go into the bios and enable top performance. Then you should be able to change the settings in advanced. Maybe start out slow, like fsb of 200 and multiplier of 11.

Off hand can't remember that bios too much. There is a jumper on the mobo for cpu clock. One position is 100MHz for the durons and old 200 bus TBirds. The other is auto I believ and is for 266 and 333 bus chips. Make sure this is on Auto as it should have been anyway for your XP2000+.

There are also jumpers in a block that can be used to set the multiplier manually if you have issues in the bios. I think they go up to 18 or higher.

I am drawing a blank on the bios now an can't hook mine up right now to check, but if you don't see options in the bios to set the fsb or cpu host frequency and the multiplier, hit CTRL F1 to bring up the advanced chipset features. I wouldn't start higher than a 166 fsb on that mobo and work the multiplier up. Turn off the top performance as that will stress your ram. Later you can try turning that on once you find your max OC. I think that mobo can reach a 200 frequency setting, but I wouldn't wager it will do that. Start 166 and 11 or 12 multiplier and hopefully you can bump the multiplier up a setp at a time to 14 or even 15. Anyway, that's a start for you. if you have more problems let us know. if noone else can help, I'll set up my GA-7vax again and try it out. Lack of desk space has prevented it for a while. I was hoping to pop a mobile on that myself for a quiet 2.0GHz system soon anyway.

I'm afraid that old mobo can't support this cpu offically, and i think you can not get what you want from this mobo(it must be using KT266A chip,so not easy to accept new cpu).Better upgrade mobo.

Truth is somewhere out there!

there are no settings for the multiplyer in the bios settings.
iv had a look in the manual and the jumpers for the multiplyer go upto 12.5 and the other set of jumpers alow me to set them at 100 133 166

the first set is on auto
and the other is on 133

its rev 1.1 when i press ctrl f1 i get extre settings but they are mostly for graphics eg fast write, agp etc
would it make a differance if i changed the jumpers from 133 to 166

ok iv changed the jumpers to 166 and multi to 12.5
and now my cpu is running at 2087.50
however some strange things are happening like aplications are not shuting down properly this was also happening before at the lower frequency

did you turn off top performance and adjust your memory timing less aggressively? Your ram might be fussing.

start with optimal setting and find your highest 166 bus OC, then adjust the mem timing as aggressively as you can.

WHAT! Oh my, yes... sure it is.

If that was listed above, my fault for missing it. PC2100 is 266 DDR and you are trying a 333 fsb. Surprised it even booted into windows to be honest.

You have to either try a huge multiplier on a 133 bus, or run the memory async with the fsb. otherwise you need PC2700 or faster to OC the fsb to 166 or higher.

512MB PC2100, pretty hard to miss.

Are you sure 12.5 multiplier is the highest jumper setting and it can't be changed in the bios? I'll look into it later today. If so, new ram or running async are your only options if you want to get more than 1.66GHZ. Ugh

In the mean time, try 12.5*133 and see if it's completely stable.

ok iv changed it back to 133 and 12.5 on the jumpers
but im still having the same problem. i open a program eg easytune4 and then i cant change anything as the mouse moves but i cant click on anything and i cant shut it down
but the keyboard still works
after i ctrl atl del it it starts working again for a while
this happens with other applications as well

What bios version are you running. Gigabytes with the dual bios are easy to flash, but I'd pop in the XP2000+ and get it stable before flashing. Let me know the version. You need F10 or newer to support bartons (which this is)

If you have F10 or F12 already:
Besides the jumpers, what changes have you made in the bios? Specifically memory wise.

What cpu voltage is it set at? Did it default to 1.45 or 1.5v. Try 1.6 or 1.65v

Hi Paul.
It seems she had this problem before, with her old proc. I have had the same problem, and found that the mem failed test 6 in memtest86. AFAIK the only fix is to replace the memory. It could also be a bad windows install, but memtest is quick, and always a good idea.

To run memtest, first you have to allow the exe file to load the prog onto a floppy. Then just tell windows to restart. This does require that the floppy is still in, and that floppy is first boot device.

Do you only have a problem with the mouse?
what os are you using, and service packs?
Is this a usb mouse?
Have you checked to see if there are any problems in device manager?

im using win2000pro
its not a usb mouse
iv put the xp2000 back in and it works fine now very stable.
how likely is it that its my ram as if it is what ram should I get?
