problem with dual monitors

i just bought windows 8 today and all my stuff was reset so then when i went to set up my dual monitors and then they both turned black and on the main one i can just see the mouse and it flickers i cant see what im doing but i can move the mouse around. then when i plug out the second screen the first one is now still blank and mouse flickers.....but when i plug out the first one the second one works but i cant get the other one to work even on its own ...does anyone have any help to this or know what it is ....ive never seen it or heard of it

and im using a vga cable on the one screen that works on a dell monitor and the other monitor that wont even work on its own now but did at the start is a Hanns-G and i was using a dvi to hdmi cable
