Problem with DVD player in HP Pavilion

Hi there. Sort of stuck here and hope someone can explain or diagnose
what is up with my pc - sort of thing.

Problem is my HP Pavillion DVD player won't play some of my DVD's. I
have Intervideo WinDVD4 SE and funnily enough some DVD's play and some
don't.

I know there is a problem straight after I place the DVD in the drive
tray and close it. Nothing happens except for "clicking" noises comong
from the tower.

No icons appear on screen and the accord to the computer the E drive
is empty.

Is there a solution? Any suggestions? I live in the UK and some of the
DVD's are Region 1 and some other regions. Is this a factor? If so is
it possible to configure a pc so it will play all region DVD's?

Any help on these issues would be enormously appreciated. Cheers!

Sounds like the laser is failing in the drive. There are two lasers.
One for DVDs and another one for CDs. You could try one of those DVD
cleaners, but I seriously doubt that will help at all. So I really
believe you are in need of a new DVD drive. Sorry that I didn't have
any better news. <sigh>

Does the problem only happen with the same discs? Do these discs work in
other players? Are the discs which don't work copies or originals?

I am a student studing in it systems support and after asking around i
found that dvd rom drives do not have 2 lasers. Cd and dvd Burners do
have two lasers one for writing one for reading.

i got a hp pavillion and have had a problem with the dvd player since
i got it. The dvd rom drive's make is pionier (i cant spell) and it
refuses to play most dvd movie disks and occisionly doesnt play dvd
rom disks either.

It seems the problem is also getting worse as the player is beginning
to refuse to play some cds as well.

any help on this matter would be greatly appriecated.

Well that doesn't sound totally correct to me. As it should be one
laser for the CD side (for writing and reading) and one for the DVD
side (for writing and reading). As how would you explain how non-
recordable DVD drives (players) also sport two lasers? Also do a
Google search to see what I mean. This one is a good example:
