I have a usb to m.2 external adapter that reads my 512MB ssd with no problem. When I place a 2TB or 4TB ssd in adapter, my software sees the drives but within 2-3 minutes the larger SSD's will no longer bee recognized. A google search suggested the problem could be that the larger capacity SSD's could not get enough power from the USB ports and and suggested purchasing an adapter with its own power supply . Problem is, I haven't found an adapter that has a separate power supply for the usb.
Thank you

I tried all usb ports , multiple usb cables and disabled turning off power. None of these worked. Same symptom; SSD identified as being present for 1-3 minutes then no longer recognized as being present by system.
Thank you for your suggestions.

Yes,
The 2TB SSD was in an internal slot and was my boot drive. I expanded to the 4TB drive internally and wanted to use the 2TB externally.

This is additional information I found in device manager when i was disabling usb "turning off power " if idle.
This was under "Universal Serial Bus Controllers in device manager.
"Unknown USB device. Set address request Failed" I clicked on this message to expand information and this was the expanded message: "Windows has stopped this device because it reported problems. (Code 43)"

Be aware there are 2 power off settings in usb controllers

Does this ext setup work on another pc?

a few questions
1)are both the external drives pci-e 4.0?
2) do they have heat sinks on them? **
3) try using a usbc-usb-c cable and plug it into usb-c 3.2 socket on back of motherboard.
4)try the included usb 3-usb-c cable plugged into "RED usb 3.2" socket on back of motherboard. as these are designed to use more power and faster speeds.

** if they dont have heatsinks they will over heat still this will cause them to shut down.. the solution would be to buy cheap removable heatsinks on amazon or ebay.. or try sticking some thermal pads to them to see if that helps.

something like these would do. (sorry its uk amazon, but you can check usa amazon for them)
