Problem with using wireless D-link AP and ethernet

I have tried searching for my specific issue but everything I find when searching is related to converting a router to an AP. That's not my issue though 🙁

My issue is that I have a DIR-825 dual band router in my upstairs bonus room and I have a D-link DAP-1522 access point downstairs. What I'm trying to do is use the access point to extend my wireless range in the house (I did this by running a cat5 cable between the router and the AP) but I'm not sure if it's working or not. Currently there are no issues with my network and connecting devices without my roku connected via ethernet to the AP, but even still only get 2/3 bars on my signal strength on my phone when I'm 10 ft away from the AP (downstairs). In my last house, I used to get perfect signal at that range (I had the identical setup). But also my problem is that I THOUGHT I would be able to plug our Roku streaming box into the AP to have a hard-wired connection to the network, while still functioning as a range extender? Is this something that can be done? Whenever I tried to configure it this way, we had major network connectivity issues (the Roku essentially would never get a connection) and our phones would see the wifi network but never be able to connect... it would just get stuck at "connecting". But I had it setup this way in my last house (same setup I believe) and it worked fine?

Would someone please help me with this issue? :) Thanks!

There are power line adapters which work great for this, the TP-Link products will basically plug a Ethernet cable into your router that attaches to a wall adapter, and then you plug the second adapter into the wall (maybe where the Roku is set up) which will provide an Ethernet connection. The powering adapters sometimes offer to extend your wireless signal, but the best way to increase your range is a stronger router. If that doesn't do it contact your ISP! Hope this helps, I use a TP-Link AV500 solely for a wired connection, and I will get around 40 Mbps down and roughly 15Mbps up on a 75mbps network. We have Comcast I believe.

I've never been a fan of the powerline type adapters. I have no issues running cat5 on my own where I need it to go. Which is why I ran cat5 between my router and this access point/range extender. I just don't understand why I can't plug in my roku via ethernet into the access point, and to also use the access point as a range extender at the same time for wifi devices. Can it not be setup to do these two function at the same time?

Edit: This is how I'm wanting it to work, essentially. Is my depiction possible with this configuration?
