Problem with XP and IDE drive

hey guys, I just built a new system (specs below). I am, however, having a problem getting my IDE hard drive to load Windows XP. The drive is from my old system and is an IDE drive. I cannot boot into my Windows XP installation on the drive now that it is connected to my new system. The error I receive states that Windows was not shut down properly.

Specs of new system:
CPU = Intel Core i5
Motherboard = Gigabyte GA-P55-UD4P
GPU = HIS Radeon HD 4670
Memory = G-Skill 4GB Dual Channel DDR3 1600.

I have a feeling that it's because of a setting in the BIOS, however, I'm not sure which setting would cause the Windows XP from my IDE hard drive not to load.

thank you for the replies guys! I have enabled the IDE controller in the BIOS. I know this works because the drives and all files on them are accessible when I boot into Windows 7.
I will try a reinstall of Windows XP and give that a shot. Any other suggestions? Thanks in advance!

Have you checked the jumper settings & boot priority..did the BIOS detected both of your harddrives..
There's no security features in xp as "jagurasks" says its in vista & win 7 only ..XP have EFS but most of us wont use it in home pcs..

I have an ASUS Striker II Extreme M/B that is SATA HDD dedicated the IDE header would only recognize an optical drive, no IDE HDD I had on hand would work, Seagate, Maxtor, or Western Digital and they were all good HDDs.

Your new M/B may also be SATA dedicated.

If it is, your solution is a SATA HDD.

@manojgj: I have checked the jumper settings and they're in the correct place.
The 2 drives I have on the IDE channel are a 80GB Seagate and a 80GB Western Digital. The Seagate is set to master, and the Western Digital is set to slave.
Also, both drives are accessible when I boot into Windows 7 64-bit. More information about my hard drives are below. I have also tried booting from it using the F12 key.

SATA Hard Drives: ■ 160GB Seagate for Windows 7 64-bit and programs ONLY
■ 500GB Seatgate for data ONLY
IDE Hard Drives: ■ 80GB Seagate from old computer with Windows XP Home Edition 32-bit installed and files
■ 80GB Western Digital from old computer, used as backup drive.


@4ryan6: You bring up a good point. However, I don't believe that is the issue with my motherboard because both IDE hard drives are readable and accessible through my Windows 7 OS and through the boot-up (F12 key) menu. Windows XP tries to load, but fails and blue-screens.

alright guys, I tried to do a repair install of Windows XP as many of you suggested, but no luck :-/
It will load the Windows XP installation screen, but the installer failed to recognize the Windows XP installation on my IDE hard drive.
Any suggestions or ideas? Thanks in advance!

hey guys, it took me a while to reply. I wanted to inform everyone that I was able to fix the problem I was experiencing.

The Problem
The problem was caused when I moved my IDE hard drive containing Windows XP from my old system and connected it to the new system I built.
The reason it would not load on the new system, and this didn't occur to me at the time, was because the new system is running different hardware (duh! lol).
So the main problem is that XP was looking for the hardware that was in my old system and when it couldn't find the hardware it was looking for while it was loading, it would blue screen.

What caused this blue screen was Windows trying to load the drivers for the old hard drive controller.

How I fixed the problem
I found a helpful tool online in something called Ultimate Boot CD for Windows. Ultimate Boot CD is basically a Preinstallation Environment, or a bootable Windows XP. Once the Ultimate Boot CD has finished loading, it has a very handy tool called fix_hdc.

hey guys, now that I have fixed this issue, I'm experiencing another problem. I am now able to boot into Windows XP, but while it is booting, my USB keyboard and mouse do not work when Windows XP has loaded. I tried connecting a PS/2 keyboard and even that isn't detected by Windows XP.
All this occurs when Windows XP is detecting new hardware, and it asks to install the driver for my Core i5; however, I have NO WAY of pressing the "Continue" button so it will install.
Any and all suggestions will be helpful! thanks in advance!

I tried that just a moment ago with a Windows XP Service Pack 2 disc. All the drives are detected, but the setup will not detect my main IDE drive that has XP Service Pack 2 installed on it and therefore, I cannot do a repair install 🙁
Any other suggestions?

I have 4 drives:

SATA Hard Drives:

I'll give that a shot in a moment. So you think the problem may be from the detection of the other drives?

you, sir, are a genius! I disconnected all the drives except for the one IDE drive I wanted to do a repair installation of Windows XP on and the Windows XP setup found the existing operating on the drive and let me do a repair install.

Thank you VERY VERY much for your help! You cannot imagine how much I appreciate it!
