After my last post, re: problems after running msconfig, I had the brainwave
to compare my Advanced System Information - Services with a win xp default
settings guide I obtained from http://www.tweakhound.com/xp/defserv.htm, and
discovered that some vital services were stopped. However, the 'enable all'
button is greyed out. What should I do?

Go to services.msc and enable them.

I thought of that too, David and should have mentioned it. However, after
replying I noticed that you had posted.
