I am not very good with networking but I want to connect a dvr home camera system to the internet so I can view it online on a phone over 3G. I have went in my router settings and put the ip for the dvr to static but it seems that only makes the local dvr static but the public ip changes everytime the router resets. The dvr is connected to the router using a wired connection so it has the DNS, ip etc already filled out. I was looking into using a DDNs service to host the dvr's ip even when the ip changes and wehnI filled everything out it worked until the router restarted and the ip changed. I believe I am supposed to download some kind of IP tracker and put it on my dvr but how can I do that? Also is there any other way which does not involve getting a static IP.

The DDNS is essentially your "IP tracker", so there is no need for additional software. Your DVR should contact the DDNS periodically to update the service with your current public IP address, even when it changes due to router reboots.

Try pinging your URL. If there is no response, there may be a problem with your DDNS registration, or some delay with your DDNS provider.

So I dont have to install the no-ip dynamic update client on my dvr? I tried pinging the DDNS provider and everything seems to be working ok until the router rebouts. On the dashboard of my DDNS account it shows my old ipv4 adress near my hostname but it does not update from the dvr nomatter how long I wait. I dont stay at the building where the dvr and cameras are installed very much, would that be a problem since I am logging into the DDNS service from a different internet connection? Also do I have to configure the DDNS for my router, I logged into my router and it said I could do something with hostnames I just have to change the default setting for the device which is Wlan to a set static ip but there is no other option exept Wlan. I am very new to networking so I probably didnt make any sense or misused alot of networking terms

If you've configured the DVR with the login credentials for your DDNS, there isn't a need for additional software.

If the DVR is somehow causing issues, you may want to look into configuring the router instead. Most routers support the popular DDNS services. I personally prefer to use the router's built in client, and it hasn't ever failed to work properly. If you do decide to configure the service on your router, you should disable it on the DVR. Having more than one client configured for DDNS may cause problems with your provider.

In addition, it's considered best practice to set a static private IP address for your DVR that is outside the range of the router's LAN DHCP. This internal IP address does not affect DDNS, and keeps any dynamic IP changes in the LAN from disrupting DVR service.

I believe I already gave the dvr a static private ip, I cannot seem to find any DDNS settings or configuration in my routers settings page, maybe because its a bell router from the isp.

Does the DVR show the status of the DDNS?

You may need to use another device on the network as a DDNS client (e.g. an always "on" PC), or check with your DDNS provider to find if there are any update issues.

The dvr does not show the settings of the DDNS, I have thought of getting an always on pc there but I dont exactly have alot of computers can just run all the time.
