Problems powering on new PC

I am a newbie attempting my first build. When I get everything set, I attempt to power on the PC and the fans start and then immediately go out. I push the power button again and nothing happens. If I unplug a jumper or a front case jumper (i.e. Power Switch, HDD LED, etc.), I can get the fans to turn on again momentarily. I'm very frustrated and don't know what could be causing this problem. I'm using a Soltek SL-75MRN board with a 2500+ Barton chip. My case is an Antec SX1040BII with a 400 Watt Power Supply. I really need help!!

Thanks,
Dave

Read the faq at the start of Motherboards and chipsets. It is very helpfull. Sounds like you have a short somewhere and the posts are a good place to start. Let us know if this does or doesn't work.

I tried tightening the posts and making sure everything lined up and the short is still occurring. Should I try to take the mobo out of the case and boot external to make sure it's not the posts? Any other ideas?

Ya take the mb out of the case and put it on the cardboard box that came with your mb. Attack only the Video card, ram, cpu heatsink fan, and powersupply then try to boot up.

Should I be able to boot up without plugging in the front panel connector for the Power Switch? If so, nothing is happening upon switching the power to On.

No you need to attack that from panel to the mb as that is what is telling your computer to turn on. The only other way is to manually Short the on switch (so to speak).

Still shorting which should rule out the post indefinitely. Any suggestions on what else to try? If not, what part is likely the culprit as to RMA ASAP.

I know you already answered this, but you are SURE that you have the CPU fan plugged into the correct CPU Fan 3 pin connector, correct? As some mb will not boot if the CPU fan is not useing the correct 3pin fan connector.

Just for the hell of it I would go to a computer store near you that has no restocking fee and buy a new powersupply just to test that. Also Make sure that you connected all the power cords correctly and didnt forget any. Its possible you have a back psu. Also If you have spare parts (maybe from an old computer, thats not ancient) and see if you can boot with those. Also make sure that all the parts are fully seated and try putting the ram in the other bank. I know that sounds crazy but My system would boot until i changed the ram bank I was useing. After that I would say rma your mb. Unless someone else has a better Idea.

I rechecked and verified that my CPU fan is connected to FAN2 and my IGP is connected to FAN1. For kicks, I even tried connecting the CPU fan to FAN1 and still no luck.

Ok, that may be your problem. You need to connect your cpu fan to the connector that says CPU_FAN not the PWR_FAN or the CHA_FAN or anything along those lines. Check your manuel under motherboard layout and hopefully you will be able to find the correct spot to plug in your cpu fan.

I checked and I've got it plugged in the right place. I think I will try your suggestion about the power supply. If that doesn't work, I may just RMA the entire machine as this has been THAT frustrating. I really, really appreciate your help and if you think of anything else, please feel free to post.
Thanks!!

Np sorry I couldnt be of more help. LOL I had the EXACT same problem with my last AMD system but it started a year after it was built And I narrowed it down to definatly being the motherboard, which is also your problem. but Hopefully it will work out for you. LOL my advice is to go Intel! lol (Ya I know I'll get flamed for that) But I tried to go amd a second time and I couldn't play ANY 3d games so after a year of bla service and then the system dieing and then the new system not working I said screw it and went intel and Im loving it. Though I have only had the system for 3 days.

A couple of things we should still look at .What video card are you using, check to make sure the bios reset jumper is in the right place, and take the cpu out and make sure none of the pins are bent. Oh did the selflocking tabs on the ram close fully? Let us know K?

I'm using the IGP that came with the mobo. Checked the pins on the CPU and they are look intact. After I attempt to turn it on and it goes on for 3 seconds, about 30 seconds later I can hear a short coming from either that power supply or the mobo near the CPU.

Woohoo!! I found the problem...it was my power supply. I took my old PCs power supply out and plugged it this new mobo...fired right up and STAYED ON! Now hopefully Newegg will let me just RMA the power supply rather than the entire case. Thanks again for all your help!!
