It seems the more Windows XP updates I download the more
problems I am having with my NVidia GeForce 4 MX440
graphics card. I'm at the point now where most games
won't even run, they just go to a black screen. I've
downloaded the latest driver from NVidia but my computer
still says it's not compatible with XP. When I try to
download the driver update from the Microsoft site it
fails every time. Any ideas?

Did yo actually install the driver that you downloaded from nvidia.com??

By default XP will give you a badly worded warning about driver signing
when you try to install them.

If you haven't installed then because of this message, then install them
telling XP to ignore it and carry on.

Hope it helps

Hi,

Don't download the nvidia drivers from windows update site.
You should download the WHQL drivers from nvidia.com, the latest WHQL driver
is 61.76
Also learn how to properly install the drivers from nvidia.com
http://www.nvidia.com/object/winxp_2k_61.76.html

If you have problems with the latest drivers then there is a archive
available
http://www.nvidia.com/object/winxp-2k_archive.html
you can try the previous versions for better compatibility. I have the same
card as you describe and when using it with my last MB (PC Chips) I settled
on 44.03 as the best at that time.

hope that helps

It depends on what games and what settings. You are not going to get
the highest settings at 1600x1200 on Doom 3 with it, but you may still
be able to play it at the lowest settings in say 640x480 :)

Yep that's true, in fact I do. Play Doom 3 in 640x480 on a MX440 that is.
