Personally I think you may just end up wrecking a perfectly good laptop.

It can be done, so long as it is socket compatible, within the original laptops cpu's wattage and TDP and compatible with current memory speed.

I swapped an old Celeron M for a Pentium DC-M and found that laptop ran cooler due to lower wattage.
