Processor temperature vs Core temperature ?

Hi,

When viewing temperatures using PC Wizard 2008, it shows :
Processor Temperature: 44
Processor Temperature (Core 1) : 62
Processor Temperature (Core 2) : 59
Processor Temperature (Core 3) : 63
Processor Temperature (Core 4) : 60

What is the difference between the first (without a core number) and then the cores ? Big difference in temps!

How high can I push these ?

Thanks,
Craig.

Processor temperature is the external temperature. It is usually the temperature underneath the chip.

The processor temperatures for the cores is reported by the sensor that is internal and located in the part of the core that was identified by intel to be the hottest of part of the cores.

I don't know what kind of CPU you have just that it is a quad. But for my Core 2 Duo E6400 that is B2 stepping, the Tjunction is 85C (max temperature internally for the cores). My external temp (can't remember the correct name) max is 61C. I have my CPU at 3.2GHZ and the Tjunction temp touches 70C and the external temp loaded is about 55.

For your cpu i think the Tjunction is 100C and the external is like 74. But I can't remember exactly.

BTW, is that under load because those are very high idle temps. But for load that sounds alright.

Those are idle temps. I had the cores at 77 degrees running 'BurnInTest'. CPU is a Q9450, not overclocked. I'm testing the install before overclocking.

Stock cooler? Stock thermal paste? even with stock those are high.....did you have any issues installing the heatsink? make sure its securely attached.

if you did have issues installing or it isnt secure, you will need new thermal paste.
Most people will recommend Arctic Silver 5 or as its usually called AS5, Arctic Coolings MX2 is supposedly good too.

PC Wizard 2008 reports my max core at 105, and the Intel specs state 71 degrees for the case temp (Tc). I have emailed Intel for verification.

If the above figures are accurate, I should be able to start overclock testing soon.

I have a Xigmatec cooler, but had issues with the fit. I replaced it with the stock cooler for now, until I get things settled. If all goes well I'll try the Xigmatec again and see what difference it makes.

BTW, can I get new feet for the cooler ? From where ?

Thanks,
Craig.

Ok crew, after reading several forums about this, I'm sort of worried about my machine, which I use for gaming all the time. Using PC Wizard, here is my readout at idle:

Processor Temperature: 84 <------------HERE'S THE PROBLEM
Mainboard Temperature: 39
ACPI Thermal Zone: 40
Processor Temperature (Core 1) : 40
Processor Temperature (Core 2) : 37
Processor Temperature (Core 3) : 36
Processor Temperature (Core 4) : 40
GFX Card: 59C (buying a new heatsink/fan for this card)
Hard Disk: 36

I've tested this using Speefan as well, same readout, however Speedfan is noticing a third temp which I'm not sure about:

Temp1: 84C
Temp2: 39C
Temp3: -54C <---yes that's typed correct

It's been like this for quite some time, and my system still runs quite fast. I don't do any sort of overclocking. Here's the simple hardware specs:

Dell Inspiron 530
Mobo: Dell 0FM586
Chipset: Intel P31/P35
Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 @2400 Mhz
4 GB RAM
NVIDIA GeForce 9600 GT

Should I be worried, or is this a some sort of reading malfunction? Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

This thread is a year old, you should create your own thread for this problem.

Use RealTemp to read your temperatures, its the most accurate temp reader for the CPU.
