Processor that will work with a Asus M2N-SLI?

Hey all.

Really need help with some dual/tri core processors that will work with my Asus M2N-SLI Motherboard. I currently have a AMD Phenom Quad and i keep bluescreening with "A clock interrupt was not recieved on a secondary processor" i'm at the last straw now i've been putting up with it for ages but now need a new one.

Edit - Should of said what i use my PC for tbh, i game on it and watch a fair amount of HD material on it be it films or otherwise. I also multi task alot while using my comp, so i don't just want a big standard do the job one, need a decentish one

So any help at all would be appreciated

It appears your Asus M2N-SLI motherboard is "AM2" socket type. Most of the Tri/Quad core CPUs available through places like NewEgg these days are AM2+ or AM3 only. I'm having a hard time locating anything decent that would work on AM2.

The Asus site says the M2N-SLI Deluxe is AM2+/AM2 socket type. So maybe you can use the AM2+ after all

You'll have to use the original Phenom X3 or Phenom X4 line if you want tri/quad core. (Can't use the Phenom II series according to the Asus Compatible CPU list)

Here's a Tri-Core that should work though:

You'll need Asus BIOS 1604 to make the X3 8750 work though.... The latest BIOS is 1701 which is here:

If you think your CPU has issues though, and believe that's where your problem is, it may not be safe to Flash your BIOS with the old CPU. However, if you don't Flash before you put the new CPU in, the X3 may not work at all.

To be honest, that's pushing the dated pile. It would certainly work, but it really isn't sufficient anymore for gaming purposes, which I assume you must game since you have a 3870x2.

Aye, not newer games anymore, i got the system about 2 years ago now i think. I do use it for watching Bluray files and HD media, as long as it makes the machine run well i don't mind.

I'm just sick of the machine coming to a crunch everytime i try to do more than 2 things, and blue screening each night.

Theoretically, AM3 CPUs are backwards compatible with AM2 and AM2+. There is no such thing as "AM2+ or AM3 only" Theoretically all processors will work on your motherboard. However, you may need a bios update. Check out Asus' website and query them as to if the bios update would allow for the newer processors.

Asus' website states that is supports all AM2 and AM2+ CPUs.

The CPU support list lists all processors that have been tested on the board. This does not mean that a new processor will not work, it just means it hasn't been tested. Personally, I would be willing to bet that the new Athlon IIs and Phenom IIs will work.

The Athlon IIx4 will outperform the older phenom at the same clockspeed and sell at 2.6GHz and 2.8GHz. If you want a major upgrade, a phenom II will be a good idea.

If you want to be extra safe, The original phenom line is on their support list, all the way up to the phenom 9850. So a replacement phenom might be an option.

While on that topic, your current problem may actually stem from lack of CPU support, although I am not familiar with the error. Update your bios. On the link I gave you earlier for ASUS website, click on download then select dos. select the 1002 bios update and download. It is the most recent update from late 2009. Asus has further instructions on how to update. Try this before buying as if it works it will save you money.

Aye that's what i have at the moment, the 9850 Quad the warranty ran out a while ago otherwise i would of replaced. I'll try the bios update and let you know how it goes, thank you 🙂

Personally, I would be willing to bet that the new Athlon IIs and Phenom IIs will work.

It may only support up to 95w CPU's in which case the Phenom II X4 940/955 might have issues as they are 125w, I say that because the Athlon 64 X2 6000+ Windsor is noticeable by it's absence from the compatibility list and it just so happens to be a 125w AM2 CPU.

It's the bit where the idea of the AM2 to AM2+ to AM3 upgrade path idea kind of falls over IMHO, good idea in theory but should have put a bit more thought into the implementation.
