Procrastinator in need of a new cpu...Thoughts?...

....... I've needed to upgrade for a while but have been waiting for the next big thing. So in the next few days I will defitnetly buy a new cpu to start my system build. What i am looking for know is a cpu that will last (not be outdatedif thats possible) for 18months if not longer. This will be my first build. Strictly gaming and internet gambling w some surfing
From what i gathered I want an amd I have 4 cpu's in mind 3700+ , 4000 or the x2 3800,4200. I dont do multitasking so the only reason i see for getting an x2 is for future games. But i read that it may take soime time for true multithreaded games to come out and they are difficult to create.Price for performance is key because any money not spent on cpu will go towards the graphic card.

Ps. I dont want to overclock 'cause i am a noobie it wont be out of the question for the future to get some longevity.

If you want a cpu that will last, go with an X2 processor. They are much more future proof (as much as is currently possible anyway). Even though not many apps really take advantage of dual core yet, they will in the future. That even includes the next Windows - Vista.

So go with a dual core processor, your choice from there depending on your budget.

I say go single 4000 if you dont want to overclock and 3700 if you do. my resoning is just becuase vista come out are u going to get it? are you going to need it? You said you play games as far as i know you dont need vista for that. I think multithreaded games are still a long time coming. so single core might be good for a while specially for 18+months.
On the other end if you get a x2 3800 how much future proof is that with new chips coming around the corner, I gues the x2 42oo might be a good choice.

I do have a dual core dont know why but i do. I guess i wanted to"future proof myself"

Everyone multi-tasks (firewall/anti-virus/windows bloat). I'd say an X2 3800, once you go dual core it will be a pain to use single cores again (just my personal opinion).

get a good solid single core now (3700) use that for a while and when it becomes outdated and dual threaded games start coming out get a dual core. that was my strategie when i built my comp.
