First, thanks for replying to my previous post "Old computer new HD".

With a promise ata controller card, do you disable the on-board ide so that the computer will boot up off a HD attached to the card? Or does the card automatically take over control of the ide connections?

Thanks again.

Don't disable the onboard IDE if you're going to use it. Just set the boot order in main BIOS to something like SCSI first. Many versions of BIOS use the term SCSI for any add-on controller card. Your BIOS might use different term. Also, make sure you install the card driver in Windows.

if you check the boot order in your bios, you should be able to select the new promise card as a boot device. In some cases you may need to flash your bios for the card to work correctly.
