Promise Controller

I am interested in the Promise Ultra 66 controller. My question is, does it allow for 4 more IDE drives to be added to the computer, or does it replace the onboard IDE ports? Can I run 8 drives if I install one of these? Also, I mostly run Linux. Is the Promise controller compatible with Linux or does it just work with Windoze?

Any help appreciated.

You'll get 4 MORE drives 8 total... UNLESS your cruddy mb wont let 2nd IDE controller use address sharing. Do not try promise controllers with Comcrap Presario 5861. Works fine in old Asus P5a board.

Oh and btw IT ROCKS.. nvr seen so high performance in my life.. 2x7200rpm ibm 2mb drives 45gig.. performs better than 2xcheeta 10K.

Yes I've tested it with Mandrake 7.1 and it works well, it is autoconfigured by the kernel. It may work with some other distributions, but I know for sure that it works with Mandrake.

Right! I got a hacked Promise ATA 100 controller (Turned into a Fastrak 100) and it really gives awesome performances.
I reached a transfer rate 11 times higher than what I had before (45Mb/s).

It really rocks.
