[citation][nom]jimbo21[/nom]There is absolutely no reason to have a separate OS on a ps3, as far a general users go. If you want linux, and for some unknown reason don't want it on your present pc, heres your cheaper than a ps3 dream machine: http://www.tigerdirect.com/applica [...] CatId=2628And I promise it has linux capabilities, and will forever, no need to sue me.[/citation]

LoL that system has 100th of the power a ps3 has using both cell+rsx 8 ps3's = super computer.

[citation][nom]Luker3[/nom]This is a law in the states too. It is called Implied Warranty of Fitness for a Particular Purpose. If the seller knows at the time of sale that you are buying for a particular use then there is a warranty that it will preform it. Now, they can also make sure they write something in their own warranty that disclaims it, but if Amazon was willing to refund money maybe it wasn't there when he contacted them.[/citation]

Interestingly enough our UCC is based on the German Commercial Code so you see a lot similarities between basic commercial laws in Europe and US

I don't buy anything Sony anymore they've already proven themselves time and time again not worthy. While your at it Sony why don't you rootkit your Playstations.

[citation][nom]chomlee[/nom]The problem is that a situation has now been created to say. "Hey if anyone bought the PS3 to use it for Linux we will sue Sony". I would guess that there were truthfully up to several thousand people who bought the PS3 because of Linux (there truely isn't much you can do with it compared to a pc Linux version). If only those people sued, it would be fine. The problem is that now everyone (millions) will come out of the woodwork and demand their 100 dollars (99.999% of which haven't even touched Linux), and not even care of how it will affect Sony and future developement. People think that companies have limitless amounts of money, but they dont. The only result of all of this is that if it got really big, it would cripple Sony and make some greedy scumbag lawyer really really rich.[/citation]
There is no way it could cripple sony, but perhaps it would hurt them little and make them (and other companies) think twice before crippling functionality.
Even FBI bought PS3s and put linux on it to crunch data using cell and many users doing same.

[citation][nom]techguy378[/nom]The PS3 was never intended for use as a full blown PC. Sony didn't even charge anyone for the privilege of running Linux. The "Other OS" option was just a free bonus feature. I don't know why people are complaining so much about this. I guess they're too cheap to buy a real PC that can actually get some real work done under Linux.[/citation]

You're wrong. The Linux feature was heavily advertised by Sony. They claimed the PS3 was much more than a video game system, it could be a computer. Hence the Linux feature.

[citation][nom]Deusdies[/nom]I'd rather pay higher taxes for my excellent healthcare system than get denied coverage[/citation]

Amen to that.

Most likely my ps3 will have to update to play a new blueray or game; however, this doesnt bother me in the least. I dont use linux so why should I get all amped up about it? Just because they disable a feature doesnt mean the product does not suit your needs anymore.

For the select few that are affect I agree that some settlement should occur. However, this does not mean that the masses should hop on for what is essentially free money. In any case, the fewer people who sue, the greater the kickbacks. If all ps3 owners sued, we would be lucky to get $30.

Nowhere on the box did it say you could run Linux. The PS3 was specifically advertised as a gaming and media center machine which does not require a separate OS such as Linux.

apparently your not getting something too

sony doesn't force firmware updates so for the proplw using it for what you state they don't have to worry about this useless crap
