The 500w PSU on my PC (AMD FX 6300) blew up on Saturday. I'm certain it was my Video Card that killed it. I went and bought another PSU, this time "550". (for reference Cooler Master Elite 550 v2). The problem now is that my CPU is running very hot: 30c-45c on idle with around 2% usage from background stuff and 60c-70c when running programs... Even just surfing the net on Chrome it's at 54c.

(in case it doesn't show "http://i68.tinypic.com/15qsu3q.jpg")

BTW, I reduced the CPU speed (downclocked) because I thought it would make a difference. It's a 3.5 system, reduced to 15x200 multiplier. Kind of a second question... Why is it showing 3800?

So what's wrong now? Could it be that when the PSU exploded it took something else out? I can replace hardware components in my computer but the little electrical parts on the MoBo are beyond my abilities.

Thanks, peeps!

Cpus isn't downclocking. Go into bios and make sure cool and quiet is enabled. Also check windows power options and make sure minimum processor state it 0%. It's not surprising if a psu takes out other components. You shouldn't cheap out on a psu but then you did again with that new psu. Btw that's labeled at 550w but is only rated for 500w but wattage isn't really the issue as that could run on a good 450w. The issue is quality. Why risk killing all components again?

@1 Thanks for the reply... But I don't need a lecture, I need an answer.

@2 The temps before the blowout were in the mid low to mid 20s. The room is about 5 degrees above ambient.

@3 Did that already.

The case is very hot to the touch at the general area where the CPU socket is located, I would compare it to a paper cup with boiling hot coffee in it.

Yep our efforts are wasted on some, rather than trying what we suggest they just argue the point.
People spending heaps on pc parts but buying cheap PSU's to run it all, will they never learn :) 😀 😛
