psu or gpu noise from rm850x

Hi all

I decided to swap out my s12ii as its fan was so noisy on load. Doing my head in.

After glowing reviews went with rm850x.

However, from nowhere I'm getting coil whine. I think.

- mouse movement
- watching vids
-gaming much worse
-Sometimes even doing nothing but looking at desktop (occassional chirps from the pc)

Could be gpu, but not a sound when using previous PSU. Not HDMI cable, power cable as tried different configs.

Have disabled eist and c states and no help.

Thought? Forums full of hm850 issues but Rm seems very well regarded. Really upset and rma would be annoying as it took 6 hours to neatly install in a small matx case (its 180mm long)

Thanks

Interesting point will chgeck.

Certainly sounds like I would know gpu coil whine (have had in the past with a 6770). BUT WAS NOT doing it BEFORE the PSU change (with my old seasonic)....so could be psu.

I tried with igpu and NO NOISE. With my 390, even at desktop, NOISE>

For example: watching msi afterburner charts nudge along each second, there is chirp each time it does so.

Prime95 - EDIT: Heavy cpu only load emits a SMALL noise...so I am guessing that is PSU. Is there any installation error (cabling etc) that can result? Tried in 2 different sockets in house.

Very stuck here

Coil whine is mostly just a certain kind of vibration that gets transported to the case and emits a sound through it (my English sucks tonight, sry)
I find it interesting that I more often hear of coil whine with cheaper cases than with more expensive, more solid cases.

But yes it could be a sound by the PSU fan as well
Saying you use a small case it's most likely vibration when GPU, PSU & CPU fans spin

Thanks for the post.

Just cooked up replacement unit from shop. Will report back in case anyone else having issue. For record the original crazy coil whune was with these components:

I5 6600k 4.4 and stock
Ddr4 3000 and stock
Z170md3h
Msi gaming 390 8g 1100/stock

Hopefully was just a bad unit. I can see lots of white gloop on the coils in this one which u don't think was there in previous unit so could be promising.

Understand regarding noise transmission, but everything silent with previous seasonicn m12. Awesome unit but awful awful fan control. Whoever designed that has ruined one of the best PSUs I have used.

I'll make sure all contacts with the case and PSU are rubber damped where possible.

It is a small case but decent quality so shouldn't be a problem.

UPDATE:
New RM850x. Much better. Still audible on desktop when opening/closing windows, but I have linked that to GPU clock fluctuations. in gaming, its much quieter although there is a slight buzz, but its pretty quiet and once fans spin up cant really be heard. 1000% improvement from before.

Tried it with iGPU only, and no issues AT ALL. which means all else is wired correctly and it must be the GPU+PSU combo. I know it isn't the GPU as I used it with the M12ii and all was quiet.

So, will see how I go over the next week.

Final update:
RMA request in for the RM850x. However, got annoyed so bought a 750GQ from EVGA. Tier 1, JG gave it 9.4 or something. Excellent reviews all round. And?

Outstanding. Quiet at 450w load, silent at normal usage (eco mode) not a single buzz, coil whine or anything.

The RM850x is probably slightly better in terms of ripple etc, but the QA with corsair is clearly poor to have 2 units do the same thing.

Yes, I imagine it should be, seems the two I got were from the same batch with dodgy coils or something.

OK, maybe not tier 1 (Toms chart needs an update then, as it lists GQ FSP as tier 1)

. However, all reviews seemed excellent, which is what I went off. In particular PCPer and Johnny Guru who put it under serious loading heat...still hit gold with excellent 12v and 5v with OK ripple. Seems solid.

I know G2 is the renowned. However there doesn't seem to be a bad review on the GQ really, stating the FSP platform is much better than of past. I couldn't see much difference in the outcomes to the reviews in terms of numbers either. Ripple being the main thing differentiating.

Anyway, I am not doubting the G2 is the better unit. Being older it was more difficult to find at a reasonable price.

However, after 2 hours of gaming, the GQ has stayed silent, and everything seems stable with no issues even with overclocking. Happy so far.
