They're mostly cheap, using less reputable OEM's for most their units (Edit: pre-2007, as outlined by anort3. Guess it's been so long since I've seen or heard anything about OCZ in the power supply area I simply thought they were still the same. My bad). I haven't seen many, if any, good reviews for an OCZ power supply in some time. If there are any that have been reviewed by somebody reputable and scored well, throw us a link. I'd be interested in knowing what model and what OEM/platform it used.

Almost every OCZ power supply was well reviewed. The units from PC Power and Cooling from after the OCZ takeover were very good to excellent. The Silencer MK III line especially. They use Seasonic and SuperFlower as the OEM depending on the wattage.

The only bad thing was OCZ's bankruptcy. Since then the old OCZ line and PC Power and Cooling lines are known as Firepower. Quite a few models are still in production but we haven't seen anything new in several years.

Yeah, after a quick google search, the ones we have are from PC Power and Cooling AFAIK. They are pretty heavy for 600 watts(or 650) and have standed the test of time and people new to PC building(we had a class on PC Repair, now it is CyberSecurity..)

Akin to this one:http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817341017

OCZ was one of the first companies to start getting dinged for poor capacitor selection. Sorry, that was too long ago for me to remember the links. It wasn't badcaps.org, but I think it was on some other forums.

OCZ also did a complete turnaround in 2007. Pre 2007 OCZ = crap. Post 2007 and you move up substantially in quality.

I edited my above post to reflect your testimony as to the turn around. I know they were really bad for a long time and I really haven't seen or heard anything from them in the area of PSUs for a long time. I'm sure they must be doing something but you certainly don't hear their name mentioned when it comes to current production models. Is there anything they're currently making that you know of that's competitive with any of the current go to units by EVGA, Seasonic, XFX or Antec?

Can any PSU experts,

say with 97-99 percent confidence,

that an Antec VP550w would safely power my r9 290 for the next two weeks, at which point I will buy a much better PSU with my paycheck?

I won't be using a super demanding CPU, and I have no intentions to overclock my GPU at all in those two weeks.

PC Power and Cooling had a reputation that was second to none when it came to power supplies. Much like Seasonic does now.

[strike]OCZ dropped the quality of the power supplies after they bought them out. And trashed the brand so badly, that when Toshiba bought OCZ out of bankruptcy, they killed the power supply division. It wasn't even worth enough to bother trying to find a buyer for it.[/strike]

That's not true. In 2007 OCZ bought PC Power and Cooling. The quality of both OCZ and PC Power and Cooling units increased. The power supply division of OCZ and PC Power and Cooling is now owned by Firepower Technology and they are still made to the same specs as before. They have not released any new units since before the financial troubles though.

Find something you would place lower than tier 2 in this list. Even including discontinued units.

The PC Power and Cooling to Seasonic analogy doesn't really work either since Seasonic actually manufactures power supplies. PC Power and Cooling was just one of Seasonic's long client list.

For the first few years I posted here rightly or wrongly I would recommend, Corsair, Seasonic, PC Power and Cooling, XFX, OCZ, Enermax, Silverstone and Antec as brands that you could always count on pretty much across the board for quality. And if I was being extra nit picky I would add Kingwin to the list. Times have changed 😛

The first time I visited PC Power and Cooling in San Diego, I believe it was about 1995-1996. They literally had benches showing their internal hardware vs other named brands of the time. And the difference was staggering. Their components were big beefy parts. Many of the other brands looked more like stereo component parts on the inside. Later on, I took a buddy of mine along, and he was as shocked at the difference in components as I had been. We both had our own businesses. And we spent a lot of time over the years comparing how things worked best and shared ideas with each other. We did a lot of things differently, but we also did many things the same way. And at times, we would jointly work on a project that we could only handle well together. It was the good times of my life. And his.

A lot has changed in the 20 years since then. And on many fronts.

100% sure it will work.

No. Pre 2007 OCZ was poor quality. Post 2007 with the acquisition of PC Power and Cooling most OCZ units were very good. Not trying to be a jerk or anything but this is a common misconception that should be cleared up. I linked their product page on RealHardTechx above. Find a unit post 2007 that deserves lower than tier 2.

My OCZ ZT PSU was a piece of crap. The fan was ridiculously loud to the point where I could hear it over my entire system. In the end I sold it to a friend and got a Corsair HX power supply.

OCZ's were notorious for the fans getting loud , like I said I would never touch one no matter the OEM.

I don't believe in Tiers either.

There's the ones you should buy and the ones you shouldn't.

Super Flower is pretty much what I purchase , every once in awhile a SEASONIC unit.
