puttting m.2 PCIE 3.0 x 4 ssd in a x2 PCIE mode m.2 slot vs using a m.2 sata ssd

if i put a m.2 PCIE 3.0 x 4 ssd in a x2 PCIE mode m.2 slot will it work faster than a m.2 sata drive would still? how much speed am i wasting and how is the speed compared to using a m.2 sata instead?

3.0 x4 NVMe drives as a single boot drive offer little perceptible differences over good quality standard SATA III SSD drives. You would be giving up some numbers on synthetic benchmarks, but you would not notice it as an average user under almost all circumstances.

If you have more than one NVMe drive in your system and frequently transfer, process or move around files......the uber-fast arrays are quite noticeable indeed......so it really depends on how you use your system as to whether you'd notice much of a difference.

What geekwad said. It's the reason why even an old sata 1 pc benefits from an ssd because real world doesn't care about possible max speed when it isn't used. Also different ssds have different speed they can reach if you look at their specs and benchmarks. Theoretical limits though, pcie 3.0 x2 is ~1.9GB/s and sata 3 is ~600MB/s.
